How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M14 x2 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 11 mm, square size 9 mm.

M14 x2 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 2 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M14 x2 thread.

M14 machine tap for through holes – Narex HSSE with a long shank to DIN 376

The Narex HSSE tap series for professional toolrooms includes an M14 machine tap for through holes with a DIN 376 long shank for tapping deep holes. The 6H tolerance conforming to DIN 376 ensures the dimensional repeatability essential for manufacturing components with the popular M14 diameter used in machinery manufacturing. The tool, made from high-speed steel with 5% cobalt, achieves a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C. The long shank minimizes tool runout and improves thread quality when tapping deep holes.

Key benefits of the M14 Narex machine tap

  • The Narex brand as a renowned cutting tool manufacturer with a long tradition, guarantees the highest manufacturing quality, consistent parameters and excellent value for money
  • Popular M14 size widely used in machinery manufacturing, the automotive industry, and steel structures requiring reliable medium-sized threaded connections
  • Long shank to DIN 376 provides greater clamping rigidity and better tool guidance, which is important when tapping deep holes in difficult-to-machine materials
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life under intensive use
  • Compatibility with ER25 tool holders and tapping heads for CNC machining centers with synchronous tapping and automatic axial compensation
  • Metric pitch of 2 mm to DIN 13 for M14 coarse threads, with a recommended tap drill diameter of 12 mm ensuring optimum thread engagement

The Narex M14 machine tap performs well in maintenance departments for thread restoration and machine repairs, and in toolrooms for manufacturing precision mechanical components. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward when tapping through holes. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended for optimum tool life.
