How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M3 x0.5 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 2.2 mm, square size 1.8 mm.

M3 x0.5 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 0.5 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M3 x0.5 thread.

M3 machine tap for through holes – HSSE with DIN 376 long shank

The M3 machine tap for through holes with a long shank according to DIN 376 is designed for CNC machining requiring increased clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance. Made from HSSE high-speed steel with 5% added cobalt, it ensures a hardness of 65-67 HRC and long cutting edge life even when machining difficult-to-machine materials. The long shank minimizes tool runout and improves thread quality in the popular M3 size. The tool meets DIN 376 requirements and provides a thread tolerance class of 6H.

Why choose the M3 machine tap with a long shank

  • Long shank to DIN 376 provides greater clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance, which is important when tapping deep holes
  • Manufacturing precision to 6H tolerance guarantees dimensional repeatability and full thread interchangeability in series production
  • Durability increased by the addition of 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C without loss of cutting performance
  • Compatibility with ER16 and ER20 tool holders and tapping heads for CNC machining centers with synchronous tapping capability
  • Designed for stainless steels austenitic 304/316 and ferritic, which require increased heat resistance
  • Metric pitch of 0.5 mm compliant with DIN 13 for M3 coarse threads, the recommended tap drill diameter is 2.5 mm

The M3 machine tap with a long shank performs well in maintenance departments for thread restoration and repairs, and in toolrooms for producing precision components. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward when tapping through holes. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

DIN 371 specifies a short shank, while DIN 376 specifies a long shank. The long shank provides greater clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance, which is recommended for deep tapping on CNC centers.

The M3 DIN 376 tap requires tool holders with sufficient clamping depth for its long shank. It is compatible with ER16 and ER20 tool holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation.

The M3 DIN 376 tap with a long shank is recommended for tapping deep holes, high-speed operation on CNC centers and applications requiring minimal tool runout.
