How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M36 x4 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 28 mm, square size 22 mm.

M36 x4 left-hand DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 4 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M36 x4 thread.

M36 left-hand machine tap for through holes – HSSE for rotating components

The M36 left-hand machine tap for through holes is a specialized tool for cutting large-diameter left-hand internal threads of 36 mm in components rotating clockwise. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% added cobalt ensures a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimum tool life when machining difficult-to-machine materials. The large-diameter M36 left-hand thread is used in drive shafts, machine tool spindles, and adjustment mechanisms requiring protection against self-loosening during operation under load.

Key benefits of the M36 left-hand machine tap for through holes

  • Left-hand thread direction (LH) used in components rotating clockwise where a right-hand thread could loosen on its own under torque
  • Long shank to DIN 376 provides greater clamping rigidity and better tool guidance, which is essential when tapping large diameters
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C, essential for machining alloy steels
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 376 ensures accurate left-hand threads and full interchangeability with left-hand threaded fasteners
  • Compatibility with ER40 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for CNC machining centers
  • Metric pitch of 4 mm complies with DIN 13, recommended tap drill diameter of 32 mm for a full left-hand thread profile

The M36 left-hand machine tap is used in the machinery industry to manufacture drive shafts, machine tool spindles, and rotating components requiring protection against self-loosening. M36 left-hand threads are found in tensioners, turnbuckles, and large adjustment mechanisms. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

The M36 left-hand thread is used in drive shafts, machine tool spindles, tensioners, turnbuckles, and wherever a component rotates clockwise and protection against self-loosening is required.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M36 left-hand thread is 32 mm — identical to that for the right-hand thread. Thread direction does not affect the tap drill diameter.

Yes, the M36 left-hand thread requires screws and nuts with left-hand threads. Standard right-hand threaded fasteners are not compatible and may damage the thread.
