Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap

The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out

The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M24 x3 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 18 mm, square size 14.5 mm.

M24 x3 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them.
2
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Individual fragments exit at the top, onto the workpiece surface.
5
A few fragments fall below the tip and exit through the bottom of the hole.
6
Feed 3 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M24 x3 thread.

M24 INOX machine tap – straight flutes, form C

The Narex HSSE series, designed for manufacturing engineers and CNC operators working with difficult-to-machine materials, includes the M24 INOX general-purpose machine tap. Tolerance class 6H according to DIN 376 guarantees the dimensional repeatability required in the production of hydraulic and pneumatic components with stringent sealing requirements. The form C design with straight flutes ensures proper chip evacuation in through holes and blind holes. The M24 HSSE machine tap made of steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 66 HRC and long cutting edge life in stainless steels.

Key features of the Narex M24 INOX tap

  • Manufacturing precision to 6H tolerance ensures dimensional repeatability and full thread interchangeability in series production of mechanical and hydraulic components
  • Compliance with DIN 376 confirms quality and ensures standardized long-shank dimensions compatible with European and Asian holders
  • Designed for stainless steels of austenitic grades 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, and aluminum alloys and engineering brass
  • Durability thanks to HSSE steel with 5% cobalt allows 350-500 threads to be produced in structural steel with proper lubrication using tapping oil
  • Compatibility with ER32 holders and tapping heads for CNC machining centers with synchronous tapping capability and axial compensation
  • Universal M24 machine tap with form C directs chips correctly in both through holes and blind holes without the risk of jamming

The Narex M24 machine tap for through holes and blind holes is used in maintenance departments for thread restoration and production machine repairs. European manufacturing quality guarantees reliability. The tap drill diameter for the M24 thread is 21 mm for a coarse thread with a pitch of 3 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M24 HSSE tap is suitable for austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, ductile cast iron, and aluminum and brass alloys. It is not recommended for hardened steels above 45 HRC.

The nominal tap drill diameter for the M24 thread is 21 mm. The hole tolerance zone should be within the range of 20.9–21.1 mm. A hole at the lower tolerance limit produces a fuller thread profile, while a hole at the upper limit reduces tapping torque.

The M24 tap works with ER32 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation. Synchronized heads with automatic tool change capability are recommended for CNC machines.
