Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap

The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out

The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M12 x1.75 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 9 mm, square size 7 mm.

M12 x1.75 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them.
2
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Individual fragments exit at the top, onto the workpiece surface.
5
A few fragments fall below the tip and exit through the bottom of the hole.
6
Feed 1.75 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M12 x1.75 thread.

M12 INOX machine tap – a tool for precision tapping

The M12 INOX machine tap is a professional tool for producing M12 internal threads in stainless, structural, and alloy steels. Its HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt provides a hardness of 66 HRC and high temperature resistance in the cutting zone up to 650°C. Form C with straight flutes allows tapping both through holes and blind holes without changing tools. Tolerance class 6H according to DIN 376 guarantees dimensional repeatability and full interchangeability with threads produced by other tools of this class. The M12 HSSE machine tap is intended for toolrooms and CNC machining center operators.

Key advantages of the M12 INOX tap

  • Durability and heat resistance thanks to HSSE steel with 5% cobalt, which retains its cutting properties at temperatures up to 650°C in the contact zone with the workpiece material
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H according to DIN 376 ensures the dimensional accuracy required in series production of mechanical components and threaded connections
  • Compliance with DIN 376 confirms standardized long-shank dimensions and full compatibility with European toolholding systems
  • Material versatility covering austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, aluminum, and GGG40 ductile cast iron
  • Compatibility with ER20 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for synchronous tapping on CNC and conventional machines
  • Suitable for through holes and blind holes thanks to form C with straight flutes, which ensures proper chip evacuation in both hole types

The M12 general-purpose machine tap is used in automotive series production and on assembly lines requiring high repeatability. The M12 machine tap for through holes and blind holes is compatible with ER20 holders and collets. The tap drill diameter for the M12 thread is 10.2 mm for a coarse thread with a pitch of 1.75 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M12 HSSE tap with form C and straight flutes is universal – suitable for both through holes and blind holes. Its design ensures proper chip evacuation in both hole types.

The M12 HSSE tap produces an internal thread to tolerance class 6H. The designation 6H specifies the permissible deviations of the thread pitch and minor diameters – the digit 6 indicates the tolerance zone width (medium), and the letter H indicates the position of the zone at the zero line. Tolerance 6H ensures proper fit with screws to tolerance 6g.

When tapping stainless steels, an EP emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or tapping oil is recommended for cooling. Cooling extends tool life by a factor of 2-3 and improves the thread surface finish.
