Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap
The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out
The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M40 x4 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 32 mm, square size 24 mm.
M40 INOX machine tap – HSSE for stainless steel
In this line, manufacturer Fra offers the M40 INOX machine tap with optimized cutting geometry for metric threads with a diameter of 40 mm and a long shank according to DIN 376. The tool meets DIN 376 requirements and provides the 6H thread tolerance class required in series production of mechanical and precision components. Its HSSE steel construction with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 66 HRC and resistance to temperatures up to 650°C in the cutting zone. Form C with straight flutes provides versatility for through and blind holes in stainless steels.
Advantages of the M40 general-purpose tap
- Long shank to DIN 376 provides increased clamping rigidity and eliminates vibration at the high cutting torques typical of large diameters
- Durability increased by the addition of cobalt in HSSE steel extends cutting edge life by 40-60% compared with standard HSS taps
- Material versatility covering austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa and nonferrous metals such as aluminum and brass
- Precision to tolerance class 6H meeting the requirements of series production of mechanical and pneumatic components with tight fit tolerances
- Conforms to DIN 376 ensures standardized long shank dimensions and interchangeability with tools from European cutting tool manufacturers
- M40 HSSE machine tap with form C ensures proper chip evacuation in through holes and blind holes without the risk of jamming
The Fra M40 general-purpose machine tap is used in steel structures, hydraulic power systems, and the manufacture of industrial automation components. The M40 machine tap for through and blind holes is compatible with ER40 holders. The tap drill diameter for the M40 thread is 36 mm for a coarse thread with a pitch of 4 mm.

Frequently asked questions
The M40 HSSE tap with form C and straight flutes is universal – suitable for both through holes and blind holes. Its design ensures proper chip evacuation in both hole types.
The M40 HSSE tap produces an internal thread to tolerance class 6H. The designation 6H specifies the permissible deviations of the thread pitch and minor diameters – the digit 6 indicates the tolerance zone width (medium), and the letter H indicates the position of the zone at the zero line. Tolerance 6H ensures proper fit with screws to tolerance 6g.
When tapping stainless steels, an EP emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or tapping oil is recommended for cooling. Cooling extends tool life by a factor of 2-3 and improves the thread surface finish.
