How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the auger in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clear, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M24x1 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 18 mm, square drive 14.5 mm.

M24x1 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M24x1 thread.

M24x1 spiral flute machine tap – metric fine thread for blind holes

The M24x1 machine tap cuts a metric fine thread with a pitch of 1 mm in tolerance class 6H. A pitch one-third of the standard pitch produces a more closely spaced thread profile, a larger contact area, and better resistance to loosening under vibration. The tool complies with DIN 374 for metric fine threads – the Ø 18 mm shank is reduced relative to the thread diameter and passes freely through the tapped hole. The 35° helical flute directs chips upward, which is essential for operation in a blind hole. HSSE steel with 5% cobalt has a hardness of 63–65 HRC and retains its cutting properties up to approximately 600 °C.

Technical specifications of the M24x1 machine tap

  • Metric fine thread used in hydraulics, pneumatics, and adjustment connections where positioning accuracy and sealing are essential
  • Material range covers structural steels with a tensile strength up to 900 MPa, stainless steels, and aluminum and copper alloys
  • Chamfer C (2–3 threads) allows the thread to extend close to the bottom of a blind hole
  • Tolerance class 6H ensures interchangeability with bolts and screws with an M24x1 thread in tolerance class 6g
  • Straight shank Ø 18 mm with a square drive works with tapping holders with axial compensation
  • Short flute length of 13 mm designed for shallow threads in thin walls and flanges

The M24x1 tap is used for valve and fitting fasteners, adjusting nuts, and thin-walled housings. The tap hole is drilled with a Ø 23 mm drill bit. With such a fine pitch, a hole diameter undersized by even 0.2 mm significantly increases tapping torque.

Frequently asked questions

The M24x1 HSSE machine tap for metric fine threads performs well in structural steels with a tensile strength up to 900 MPa, stainless steels, aluminum, and brass. The fine pitch of 1 mm ensures leak-tight connections in hydraulic applications up to 400 bar.

For the M24x1 metric fine thread in tolerance class 6H, the tap drill diameter should be 23 mm. The permissible hole tolerance range is 23.0-23.2 mm. A smaller hole increases cutting torque and the risk of tool breakage.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimal lubrication.
