Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap

The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out

The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. There is no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M14 x2 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 11 mm, square size 9 mm.

M14 x2 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them.
2
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Individual fragments exit at the top, onto the workpiece surface.
5
A few fragments fall below the tip and exit through the bottom of the hole.
6
Feed 2 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M14 x2 thread.

M14 INOX machine tap – for stainless and alloy steel

The M14 INOX machine tap is a professional tool for cutting M14 internal threads in stainless, structural, and alloy steels. HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt provides a hardness of 66 HRC and high heat resistance in the cutting zone up to 650°C. Form C with straight flutes enables tapping both through holes and blind holes without changing tools. Tolerance 6H in accordance with DIN 376 guarantees dimensional repeatability. The M14 HSSE machine tap is designed for toolrooms and CNC machining center operators.

Key advantages of the M14 INOX tap

  • Durability and heat resistance thanks to HSSE steel with 5% cobalt, which retains its cutting properties at temperatures up to 650°C in the contact zone with the workpiece material
  • Compliance with DIN 376 confirms standardized long-shank dimensions and full compatibility with European cutting tool holding systems
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H guarantees the dimensional accuracy required in the production of pneumatic components and high-quality industrial valves and fittings
  • Compatibility with ER25 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for synchronous tapping on CNC and conventional machines
  • Designed for stainless steels austenitic grades 304 and 316 and ferritic grades, which require tools with increased heat and abrasion resistance
  • Universal M14 machine tap with form C evacuates chips properly in through holes and blind holes without the risk of thread damage

The M14 machine tap for through holes and blind holes is used in the production of industrial fittings and pneumatic components requiring leak-tight threaded connections. Cooling with an EP emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% extends tool life by a factor of 2-3 compared with dry machining. The tap drill diameter for the M14 thread is 12 mm for the coarse thread with a pitch of 2 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M14 HSSE tap is suitable for austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, ductile cast iron, and aluminum and brass alloys. It is not recommended for hardened steels above 45 HRC.

The nominal tap drill diameter for the M14 thread is 12 mm. The hole tolerance zone should be within the range of 11.9–12.1 mm. A hole at the lower tolerance limit produces a fuller thread profile, while a hole at the upper limit reduces tapping torque.

The M14 tap works with ER25 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation. Synchronized heads with automatic tool change capability are recommended for CNC machines.
