Hand reamer 13 H7 NRTh DIN 206 in HSS — shank-type finishing reamer for cylindrical holes with a square drive for a tap wrench

Hand reamer 13 H7 NRTh — characteristics

construction, operation, and applications

Shank-type, fixed-size hand reamer 13 H7 NRTh (DIN 206) finishes cylindrical holes of diameter Ø13. It sizes them to the tolerance zone H7 (13.000–13.018 mm), removing only a few hundredths of a millimeter on the diameter; the result is an accurate hole with good roundness and a smooth wall.

The tool is made of high-quality Polish-made high-speed steel (HSS). The cutting section has straight flutes and 8 cutting edges that distribute cutting resistance over more edges — this improves hole roundness and reduces vibration compared with a two-lip drill. The extended, slightly tapered lead facilitates self-centering in the pilot hole, while the straight shank with square drive allows the reamer to be driven with a tap wrench in a smooth, steady motion.

This is a machining operation for finishing operation, not roughing: drilling produces a hole of grade IT10–IT11, whereas the reamer brings it to H7 and smooths the surface. Remember that a reamer follows the existing hole and will not correct a crooked hole — hence the need to drill the initial hole perpendicular to the surface and on axis. The hand version has a longer lead taper and more cutting edges than a machine reamer, making it easier to control during manual feeding. It is used when assembling bearing shells, for which an accurate, smooth hole determines correct seating.

Your reamer produces tolerance grade H7 — finished hole Ø13.000–13.018 mm; the value is stated directly, without conversion from tables. A narrower tolerance zone means a more accurate hole. The reamed surface is smooth — typically Ra 0.4–1.6 µm, significantly better than after drilling alone (approx. 1.6–3.2 µm).

Manual machining — how to ream Ø13 H7

tap wrench operation, allowance and predrilled hole

Drive is transmitted by a tap wrench fitted over the square drive of the shank; rotate the reamer smoothly in one direction with light, even pressure. For a Ø13 H7 hole, allow a 0.2–0.3 mm allowance on diameter and drill a pilot hole Ø12.7 mm, then hand-ream to the final size. Maintain moderate, even pressure and do not reverse rotation while cutting. Use generous lubrication — cutting oil reduces cutting resistance and produces a finish of Ra 0.4–1.6 µm, better than the approximately 1.6–3.2 µm obtained by drilling.

▲Important: is a tool for manual machining — it is not intended for powered operation at high speeds. High-speed steel loses hardness above approx. 600 °C, so lubricate generously. Do not stop the reamer in the hole or reverse rotation — always withdraw it while continuing to rotate forward; withdrawing without rotation risks chip jamming, chipped cutting edges and a poorer hole finish.

Applications — workpiece materials

groups P1.2–P1.3 according to the material classification

✓Unalloyed and structural steel
✓Free-machining steel
✓Nonferrous metals — brass, bronze, copper
✓Light alloys and soft metals
▲Alloy steel — possible with generous lubrication and low speeds
✗Hardened steel and hardened stainless steel — beyond the capabilities of HSS

Frequently asked questions

It performs best in unalloyed and free-machining steels, as well as nonferrous metals and light alloys (P1.2–P1.3). Machine alloy steel carefully with generous lubrication. Do not machine hardened steels or hardened stainless steels — these exceed the capabilities of HSS.

The H7 zone for Ø13 mm is +0.018 / 0 mm, so the finished hole falls within 13.000–13.018 mm. The reamed surface is smooth (Ra 0.4–1.6 µm) — considerably finer than after drilling alone (approximately 1.6–3.2 µm).

Drill a Ø12.7 mm pilot hole perpendicular to the surface, leaving a stock allowance of 0.2–0.3 mm on the diameter. Then hand-ream to the final size with steady rotation and generous lubrication.
