How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 40° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 40° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the auger in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clear, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M25x1.5 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 18 mm, square drive 14.5 mm.

M25x1.5 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
The 40° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 1.5 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M25x1.5 thread.

M25x1.5 spiral flute machine tap – metric fine thread for blind holes

The M25x1.5 machine tap cuts a metric fine thread with a pitch of 1.5 mm in tolerance class 6H. M25 is an intermediate size between M24 and M27, used in hydraulic fittings and housings with specified overall dimensions. The tool complies with DIN 374 for metric fine threads; the Ø 18 mm shank is reduced relative to the thread diameter and passes through the already-cut thread. The 40° spiral flute evacuates chips upward faster than the standard 35° design, making it easier to work in deep blind holes. HSSE steel with 5% cobalt has a hardness of 63–65 HRC and retains its cutting properties up to approximately 600 °C.

Technical specifications of the M25x1.5 machine tap

  • Pitch 1.5 mm provides a more closely spaced profile than a coarse thread, better connection sealing, and greater resistance to self-loosening
  • 40° spiral flute evacuates chips more aggressively than the 35° version – designed for materials producing long, ribbon-like chips
  • Material range includes structural steels up to 900 MPa, austenitic stainless steels, and aluminum and copper alloys
  • Chamfer C (2–3 threads) allows the thread to extend close to the bottom of a blind hole
  • Tolerance class 6H ensures interchangeability with screws with an M25x1.5 thread in tolerance class 6g
  • Flute length 27 mm with an overall length of 140 mm is sufficient for a thread depth greater than one diameter

The M25x1.5 tap is used in gearbox housings, hydraulic blocks, and nonstandard adjustment connections. The tap hole is drilled with a Ø 23.5 mm drill bit. Cooling with tapping oil is recommended, along with a cutting speed reduction of 20 to 30 percent for stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions

The M25x1.5 HSSE metric fine machine tap is suitable for structural steels up to 900 MPa, stainless steels, aluminum, and brass. The 1.5 mm pitch is used in industrial hydraulics and pressure valves and fittings.

For the M25x1.5 metric fine thread in tolerance class 6H, the tap drill diameter should be 23.5 mm. The permissible hole tolerance range is 23.5-23.7 mm. A smaller hole increases cutting torque and the risk of tool breakage.

Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion at a minimum concentration of 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimal lubrication.
