Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap

The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out

The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. It has no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, beside the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M10 x1.5 tap has a reinforced shank according to DIN 371: diameter 10 mm, square drive 8 mm.

M10 x1.5 DIN 371 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them.
2
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Individual fragments exit at the top, onto the workpiece surface.
5
A few fragments fall below the tip and exit through the bottom of the hole.
6
Feed 1.5 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M10 x1.5 thread.

M10 HSS machine tap – a general-purpose tapping tool

The M10 HSS machine tap is a professional tool for cutting M10 internal threads in structural steels, aluminum, and gray cast iron. Its HSS high-speed steel construction provides a hardness of 64 HRC and stable operation at standard machining parameters. Form C with straight flutes allows tapping of both through holes and blind holes without changing tools. The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 371 guarantees dimensional repeatability and full interchangeability with threads cut using other tools in this class. The M10 general-purpose machine tap is designed for toolrooms, series production departments, and machining center operators.

Key advantages of the M10 HSS tap

  • Durability and reliability thanks to HSS high-speed steel with a hardness of 64 HRC, which retains its cutting properties over hundreds of tapping cycles in materials with a strength of up to 800 MPa
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H according to DIN 371 ensures the dimensional accuracy required in series production of mechanical components and threaded connections
  • Compliance with DIN 371 confirms standardized short shank dimensions and full compatibility with European toolholding systems
  • Material versatility covering structural steels, carbon steels, aluminum, brass, and gray cast iron without changing machining parameters
  • Compatibility with ER16 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for synchronous tapping on CNC and conventional machines
  • Suitable for through holes and blind holes thanks to form C with straight flutes, which ensures proper chip evacuation in both hole types

The M10 machine tap for through holes and blind holes is used in automotive series production and on assembly lines requiring high repeatability. Compatible with ER16 holders, collets, and tapping chucks with axial compensation. The tap drill diameter for the M10 thread is 8.5 mm for a coarse thread with a pitch of 1.5 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M10 HSS tap is suitable for structural steels up to 800 MPa, gray and ductile cast iron, and aluminum alloys and brass. It is not recommended for stainless steels or steels hardened above 45 HRC.

The nominal tap drill diameter for the M10 thread is 8.5 mm. The hole tolerance zone should be within the range of 8.4–8.6 mm. A hole at the lower tolerance limit produces a fuller thread profile, while a hole at the upper limit reduces tapping torque.

The M10 tap works with ER20 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation. Synchronized heads with automatic tool change capability are recommended for CNC machines.
