How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M16x1.5 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 12 mm, square size 9 mm.

M16x1.5 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1.5 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M16x1.5 thread.

M16x1.5 fine thread machine tap – HSSE for industrial hydraulics

The HSSE tap series designed for professional toolrooms includes the M16x1.5 fine thread machine tap in a cobalt steel version for industrial hydraulic applications. Tolerance class 6H according to DIN 374 guarantees the dimensional repeatability needed to produce hydraulic components with the common diameter of 16 mm and a fine thread pitch. The tool, made of high-speed steel (HSS) with 5% cobalt, achieves a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C. The 1.5 mm pitch is standard in industrial hydraulics, providing excellent sealing of threaded connections under pressure.

Advantages and applications of the M16x1.5 fine thread machine tap

  • Fine thread with a 1.5 mm pitch is standard in industrial hydraulics, providing good connection sealing and higher strength than the M16x2 coarse thread
  • Standard in industrial hydraulics — the M16x1.5 thread is widely used in hydraulic connections, valve blocks, and high-pressure industrial fittings
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life under intensive use
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 374 ensures precise thread production and full interchangeability with hydraulic fittings used in industry
  • Material versatility covering structural steels up to 800 MPa, alloy steels, austenitic stainless steels 304/316, and gray and ductile cast iron
  • The recommended tap drill diameter of 14.5 mm for the M16x1.5 metric fine thread ensures optimal thread engagement with minimal tool load

The M16x1.5 machine tap is used in industrial hydraulics, pneumatics, valve blocks, and wherever leak-tight threaded connections are required in pressurized systems. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward when tapping through holes. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 6-8% is recommended to maintain optimum tool life.

Frequently asked questions

The M16x1.5 thread is standard in industrial hydraulics due to its good sealing, higher strength than a coarse thread, and the widespread availability of hydraulic fittings in this size.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M16x1.5 metric fine thread is 14.5 mm. Precise hole machining ensures full thread engagement.

The M16x1.5 fine thread provides approximately 35% higher tensile strength, better sealing, and greater resistance to self-loosening with a slightly longer assembly time.
