How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M25x1 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 18 mm, square size 14.5 mm.

M25x1 DIN 374 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M25x1 thread.

M25x1 machine tap for metric fine threads – HSSE for precision mechanisms

The M25x1 machine tap for metric fine threads is designed for precise tapping of holes with a nonstandard diameter of 25 mm. HSSE high-speed steel with 5% added cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimum tool life when machining materials with a tensile strength up to 800 MPa. The M25x1 metric fine thread with a very small pitch is used in precision mechanisms and industrial optics where fine adjustment of axial position is required. The M25 diameter is a nonstandard size used in specialized applications.

Technical specifications of the M25x1 metric fine thread machine tap

  • Nonstandard M25 size used in specialized industrial applications where standard M24 or M27 sizes do not meet design requirements
  • Fine thread with a 1 mm pitch provides the highest precision in axial position adjustment — one revolution produces a movement of just 1 mm
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C required when machining alloy and stainless steels
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 374 ensures metric fine thread accuracy and full interchangeability with fasteners
  • Compatibility with ER32 holders and collets for precise clamping on CNC machining centers
  • Recommended tap drill diameter 24 mm for the M25x1 metric fine thread ensures optimal thread engagement

The M25x1 machine tap for metric fine threads is used in industrial optics, precision mechanisms, and specialized measuring equipment where fine adjustment and a nonstandard diameter are required. The M25 thread is a special size — verify fastener availability. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

The M25x1 thread is used in specialized industrial applications, optics, precision mechanisms, and wherever standard M24 or M27 sizes do not meet design requirements.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M25x1 metric fine thread is 24 mm. The M25 thread is a nonstandard size — check drill bit availability.

M25 is a nonstandard size, and fasteners may be less readily available than for standard M24 or M27 sizes. Checking availability with suppliers in advance is recommended.
