How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole
Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread
The form B chamfer for through holes has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled cut in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs the chip down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chip curls into a coil, breaks into short pieces and exits the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chip does not pass through them on its way up. The M5x0.5 tap has a reduced shank according to DIN 374: diameter 3.5 mm, square size 2.7 mm.
M5x0.5 fine-thread machine tap – HSSE for precision engineering
The M5x0.5 machine tap for metric fine threads is a specialized tool for producing internal threads with a reduced pitch of 0.5 mm in the popular M5 diameter. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt ensures a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimal durability when machining difficult-to-machine materials. The M5x0.5 metric fine thread is used in precision engineering, optics, and industrial electronics, where precise adjustment and high resistance to self-loosening are required.
Why choose the M5x0.5 metric fine thread machine tap
- Fine thread with a 0.5 mm pitch provides maximum adjustment precision — one revolution produces a travel of just 0.5 mm, ideal for micro-adjustment
- Increased load-bearing area of the thread of the metric fine thread results in higher tensile strength and better resistance to self-loosening
- HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C, extending cutting edge life
- The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 374 ensures thread accuracy and full interchangeability with fasteners
- Short shank to DIN 374, compatible with ER11 and ER16 collet chucks and tapping chucks with axial compensation
- The recommended hole diameter of 4.5 mm for the M5x0.5 metric fine thread ensures an optimal percentage of thread engagement
The M5x0.5 machine tap is used in industrial optics, precision mechanisms, electronics, and the aerospace industry, where micro-adjustment and protection against self-loosening are required. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 6-8% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions
The M5x0.5 metric fine thread provides 60% higher adjustment precision, higher tensile strength, and excellent resistance to self-loosening thanks to its finer pitch.
The recommended tap drill diameter for the M5x0.5 metric fine thread is 4.5 mm — larger than for the M5 coarse thread (4.2 mm) due to the finer pitch.
The M5x0.5 thread is used in industrial optics, precision mechanisms, electronics, and the aerospace industry, where micro-adjustment and protection against self-loosening are required.
