How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole
The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor
The flutes of this tap follow a right-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the auger in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clear, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M25x1 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 374: diameter 18 mm, square drive 14.5 mm.
M25x1 spiral flute machine tap – metric fine thread for blind holes
The M25x1 machine tap cuts a metric fine thread with a pitch of 1 mm in tolerance class 6H. M25 is an intermediate size found in valves, fittings, and hydraulic housings where M24 is too weak and M27 does not fit within the available space. The tool complies with DIN 374 for metric fine threads, with a Ø 18 mm shank reduced relative to the thread diameter. The 35° helical flute evacuates chips upward, allowing the tool to work in a blind hole without chips jamming at the bottom. HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt has a hardness of 63–65 HRC and retains its cutting properties up to approximately 600 °C.
Technical specifications of the M25x1 machine tap
- Pitch 1 mm produces a closely spaced thread profile, greater resistance to loosening, and more precise adjustment of component position
- Material range covers structural steels with a tensile strength up to 900 MPa, austenitic stainless steels, aluminum, and brass
- Chamfer C (2–3 threads) allows the thread to extend close to the bottom of a blind hole
- Flute length 32 mm with an overall length of 140 mm, is sufficient for a thread depth greater than one diameter
- Tolerance class 6H meets standard accuracy requirements in machine building and ensures interchangeability with an external thread of tolerance class 6g
- Ø 18 mm shank with square drive fits tapping holders with axial compensation and ER collets
The M25x1 tap is used in industrial pneumatics, special valves and fittings, and nonstandard adjustment connections. The tap hole is drilled with a Ø 24 mm drill bit. Cooling with an emulsion at a concentration of at least 8 percent or with tapping oil is recommended.

Frequently asked questions
The M25x1 HSSE metric fine thread machine tap performs well in structural steels up to 900 MPa, stainless steels, aluminum, and brass. The M25 size is used in industrial pneumatics and special valves and fittings requiring leak-tight connections.
For the M25x1 metric fine thread in tolerance class 6H, the recommended tap drill diameter is 24 mm. The hole tolerance zone should fall within the range of 24.0 to 24.2 mm. Exceeding the upper limit results in an incomplete thread profile.
Yes, cooling with an oil emulsion of at least 8% or with tapping oil is recommended and extends tool life by a factor of 2-3. Intensive cooling is required when machining stainless steels, while aluminum can be tapped with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL).
