How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 40° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap spiral to the right at an angle of 40° to the axis. The tap rotates clockwise and advances into the hole. Chips cut by the chamfer enter the flute, and the helix carries them upward like the auger in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M5 x0.8 tap has a reinforced shank to DIN 371: diameter 6 mm, square 4.9 mm.

M5 x0.8 DIN 371 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
The 40° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 0.8 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M5 x0.8 thread.

M5 spiral flute machine tap – premium powder metallurgy steel

The FAN premium tap series designed for series production includes the M5 spiral flute machine tap made from HSSE-PM powder metallurgy steel for enhanced tool life. The 6H tolerance according to DIN 371 ensures the dimensional repeatability required in series production of mechanical components. Powder metallurgy manufacturing provides a uniform microstructure and a hardness of 66-68 HRC while maintaining high toughness. The 40° spiral flute directs chips backward when tapping blind holes in difficult-to-machine materials.

Why choose the M5 spiral flute machine tap

  • Compliance with DIN 371 confirms manufacturing quality and ensures standardized short shank dimensions compatible with European machine tool holders
  • Designed for series production includes electronic components, equipment housings, automotive components, and measuring equipment
  • Tolerance class 6H precision guarantees full thread interchangeability and dimensional repeatability in high-volume production of precision components
  • Durability of HSSE-PM powder metallurgy steel enhanced by the uniform microstructure, allows 800-1000 threads to be cut in structural steel
  • Form C chamfer for blind holes allows tapping close to the bottom of the hole with a minimal incomplete thread length of 2-3 pitches
  • 40° spiral flutes provide aggressive chip evacuation when tapping deep blind holes in difficult-to-machine materials

The M5 spiral flute tap is used in manufacturing automotive and precision engineering components requiring high repeatability. The standard pitch of the M5 thread is 0.8 mm, with a tap drill diameter of 4.2 mm. A premium tool recommended for difficult-to-machine materials and steels with inclusions.

Frequently asked questions

The Fana M5 HSSE-PM tap is designed for austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, alloy steels, titanium, and difficult-to-machine nickel alloys. The uniform microstructure of powder metallurgy steel ensures stable operation in materials with inclusions.

For an M5x0.8 thread of tolerance class 6H, the recommended tap drill diameter is 4.2 mm. The hole tolerance range should be 4.2 to 4.3 mm. Exceeding the upper limit results in an incomplete thread profile.

Fana HSSE-PM taps are manufactured using powder metallurgy, providing a uniform microstructure and a hardness of 66-68 HRC compared with 65-67 HRC for standard HSSE. This translates into 30-50% longer tool life when machining stainless steels and improved resistance to chipping.
