M2 HSS die – precision threading of microcomponents
The M2 die is a tool for producing external threads on small mechanical parts with a diameter of 2 mm. Made of high-speed steel (HSS) according to DIN 22568, the M2 metric die enables precise thread cutting on microcomponents made of low-carbon steels, aluminum, and copper alloys used in electronics, optics, and medical equipment, with a tolerance of 6g and a pitch of 0.4 mm.
Features of the M2 HSS die
- Manufacturing accuracy essential in the production of optical components, sensors, and electronic microconnectors
- The hardness of HSS steel ensures cutting edge stability when machining miniature parts
- The DIN 22568 standard confirms dimensional compatibility with M2 nuts used in electronics
- Pitch 0.4 mm optimizes connection reliability while maintaining small external thread dimensions
- Proven in precision workshops, research laboratories, and measuring instrument production
Instrumentation technicians and precision equipment specialists use the M2 threading die when assembling microscopes, laser equipment, and medical devices. An essential tool for optical service centers, industrial sensor manufacturers, and workshops repairing professional electronics.
Frequently asked questions
The M2 thread is used in camera bodies for tripod mounting, in laboratory microscopes for objective adjustment components, in inductive and capacitive sensors for mounting sockets, and in medical equipment such as endoscopes and surgical instruments. It is also used in mechanical watches, precision model making, and miniature signal cable connectors in professional electronics.
Prepare a rod with a diameter of 1.90-1.93 mm to an accuracy of 0.02 mm using a micrometer. The surface must be smooth, with no roughness exceeding Ra 1.6. Create an entry chamfer over a length of 0.5 mm using a diamond file or a precision grinder. Clamp the stock in a precision vise with copper inserts to prevent the thin rod from deforming under jaw pressure.
The main challenge is keeping the die perfectly perpendicular to the rod axis - a deviation exceeding 2° will damage the delicate thread. Guide the tool very gently, without excessive pressure that could break the thin rod. Even the slightest inaccuracies in stock preparation become visible. Magnifying optics are recommended to check the start of threading, along with generous lubrication using specialized friction-reducing products.
