How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 35° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a left-hand helix at an angle of 35° to the axis. The tap rotates counterclockwise and advances into the hole. The chip cut by the chamfer enters the flute, and the helix feeds it upward like the auger in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M4 x0.7 tap has a reinforced shank according to DIN 371: diameter 4.5 mm, square size 3.4 mm.

M4 x0.7 left-hand DIN 371 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
The 35° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 0.7 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M4 x0.7 thread.

M4 left-hand blind-hole machine tap – HSSE DIN 371

The M4 left-hand machine tap is a professional tool for cutting internal threads in blind holes. Made from HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt and a hardness of 65-67 HRC, it ensures optimal cutting edge life and stable operation at temperatures up to 650°C. Tolerance 6H in accordance with DIN 371.

Main advantages of the M4 left-hand machine tap

  • HSSE material – hardness of 65-67 HRC and heat resistance up to 650°C
  • Chamfer C (2÷3 threads) – optimal for blind holes
  • Tolerance 6H – standard accuracy grade for bolted joints
  • Compliance with DIN 371 – verified dimensional quality
  • 35° spiral flutes – efficient rearward chip evacuation

The M4 machine tap is used in toolrooms and maintenance departments. The recommended tap drill diameter is 3.3 mm.
