Diamond-shaped H6310 cemented carbide insert – applications and design

single-sided 35° diamond with a hole and chip breaker

The VCMT 110304 turning insert is a single-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, intended for finish turning steel and stainless steel. Shape V, a diamond with a 35° corner angle, facilitates machining profiles, undercuts, and copy-turned contours where good tool access to the material is important. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle reduces cutting resistance and is suitable for thin cuts and slender workpieces prone to vibration. The small nose radius rε 0.4 mm ensures accurate edge reproduction and low surface roughness at feed rates of 0.05–0.1 mm/rev. The countersunk hole and single-sided chip breaker control chip flow and breaking during finishing.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Two cutting edges — 2 corners of 35° each on one side of the insert; positive, single-sided geometry prevents use of the other side.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide for steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — finishing at low feed rates with low surface roughness.
  • The acute 35° corner angle provides access to contours and undercuts and enables copy turning of hard-to-reach profiles.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 11 mm, IC 6.35 mm (1/4″), thickness 3.18 mm — compatible with holders with a size 11 V-shaped pocket.
  • Tolerance class M ensures repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert to the other corner.

Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert

The acute 35° corner angle is the main advantage of this cutting insert: it allows the tool to follow complex profiles, machine undercuts, and perform copy turning without the holder colliding with the workpiece. However, the slender corner is more sensitive to overload, so VCMT is reserved for finishing and semi-finishing rather than heavy roughing. Grade H6310 with a PVD coating combines abrasion resistance with cutting edge resistance to chipping, extending cutting edge life when turning steel and stainless steel. These are among the more frequently selected inserts for turning tools and finish turning in size 11 V-shaped pockets.

The VCMT 110304 insert (also written without a space as vcmt110304) is suitable for finishing shafts, sleeves, and pins made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1989 rpm. For stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min and a constant feed rate to limit work hardening of the layer being cut and uneven cutting edge wear. Indexable inserts in grade H6310 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select the version VCMT 110304 CBN with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge. The small nose radius rε 0.4 mm should be reserved for finishing, not heavy roughing.

Frequently asked questions about the VCMT 110304 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Two — the 35° diamond has 2 corners, and the positive, single-sided geometry (clearance angle 7°) allows only one side of the insert to be used. Once both corners are worn, the insert is replaced because the other side has no cutting edges.

Holders with a size 11 V-shaped diamond pocket (IC 6.35 mm): for external turning SVJCR/L (entering angle 93°), SVHCR/L (107.5°) and neutral SVVCN with shank cross sections of 16×16 and 20×20 mm; for boring, boring bars S16P and S20R with an SVUCR/L or SVQCR/L head.

Only in corner radius: 0.2 mm is used for very precise finishing and thin cuts, 0.4 mm is a general-purpose finishing version, while 0.8 mm is selected for higher feed rates and greater corner strength. The other dimensions (IC 6.35 mm, thickness 3.18 mm) are identical.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
