Diamond-shaped insert made of K10 carbide – applications and design
single-sided 35° diamond with a positive, sharp edge
The VCGT 160408 turning insert is a single-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of grade K10 fine-grained carbide, designed for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape V, a narrow diamond with a 35° corner angle, facilitates copy turning and access to narrow profiles and undercuts. The positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle (letter C) reduces cutting forces and promotes clean evacuation of long aluminum chips. The sharp, polished edge reduces built-up edge and material adhesion, so the insert operates with two cutting edges on one side.
Grade K10 is a fine-grained carbide with a very sharp edge — a key feature when cutting soft, sticky light alloys. The letter G in the designation indicates a tight, ground tolerance class, so corner positioning remains repeatable after rotating the insert without resetting the turning tool. The countersunk hole (letter T) secures the insert with a screw and leaves room for a single-sided chip breaker that curls and breaks the flowing chips. The nose radius rε of 0.8 mm combines a good surface finish with tip resistance to chipping at feed rates of 0.15–0.22 mm/rev.
Key features of the K10 carbide insert
- Two cutting edges — 2 corners of 35° each on one side; the positive geometry prevents use of the other side but provides light cutting with low resistance.
- Grade K10 for ISO group N — fine-grained carbide for aluminum, light alloys, and nonferrous metals; the sharp, polished edge reduces built-up edge.
- Corner angle 35° — the narrow diamond enables copy turning, undercutting, and access to complex profiles that a 80° diamond-shaped insert cannot machine.
- The positive 7° clearance angle reduces cutting forces and power consumption — an advantage for thin-walled workpieces prone to deflection.
- Tolerance class G (ground) provides a tight IC tolerance of ±0.025 mm and repeatable edge positioning after rotating the insert in the pocket.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 16 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 4.76 mm — compatible with holders with a size 16 V-shaped pocket.
Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert
The VCGT 160408 insert (also written without a space as vcgt160408) is suitable for turning shafts, bushings, flanges, and thin-walled parts made of aluminum alloys, brass, and bronze. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 600 m/min, the result is approximately 4775 rpm, illustrating the high speeds required for efficient aluminum machining. Maintain a generous coolant supply and a constant feed to prevent long aluminum chips from wrapping around the workpiece or tool holder. For finishing, use the upper end of the speed range and a low feed of around 0.15 mm/rev; for roughing, use a higher feed and a depth of cut up to 5 mm. Grade K10 turning tool inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
Grade K10 with a sharp, polished edge is intended for aluminum and nonferrous metals — it is not suitable for turning steel or stainless steel, where the thin edge chips quickly. For these materials, select an insert in a grade from group ISO P or M with a reinforced edge.

Frequently asked questions about the VCGT 160408 insert
number of cutting edges, tool selection, and workpiece materials
Two — the 35° diamond has 2 corners usable for cutting, and the positive geometry (letter C, 7° clearance angle) makes the insert single-sided. Only the top side can be used; replace the insert once both corners are worn.
Holders with a size 16 V-shaped diamond pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning SVJCR/L, SVHCR/L and neutral SVVCN with shank cross sections of 20×20–32×32 mm; for boring, boring bars S25S–S40U with an SVUCR/L or SVQCR/L designation suffix. The letter V in the tool holder designation corresponds to a 35° rhombic insert.
Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm is selected for roughing. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, side length 16 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical.
Not recommended — grade K10 with a sharp, polished edge is intended for aluminum and nonferrous metals in group ISO N. When turning steel, the thin edge chips quickly; for these materials, select an insert in a group P or M grade with a reinforced corner.
