Diamond-shaped insert made of K10 carbide – applications and design
single-sided 35° diamond with a hole and chip breaker
The VCGT 160404 turning insert is a single-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of fine-grained cemented carbide in grade K10, designed for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape V, a diamond with an acute 35° corner angle, facilitates copy turning, profiling, and access to narrow workpiece contours. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle, indicated by the letter C, reduces cutting forces and improves chip evacuation. The sharp, ground edge with a single-sided chip breaker reduces built-up edge formation when machining ductile aluminum. The mounting hole with a diameter of 4.4 mm allows the insert to be securely screw-fastened in the holder pocket.
Key benefits of the K10 cemented carbide insert
- Two sharp cutting edges — the 35° diamond provides two working corners on a single-sided, positive insert, ready for finish turning.
- Grade K10 for ISO group N — fine-grained carbide for aluminum, brass, bronze, and other nonferrous metals; sharp, often polished edge.
- Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — finishing with low radial force, a good surface finish, and the ability to machine small radii.
- Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle provides low cutting resistance and clean evacuation of long chips from light alloys.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 16 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 4.76 mm, hole d1 4.4 mm — compatible with holders featuring a V 16 pocket.
- The acute 35° corner angle reduces the length of edge contact with the material, facilitating turning of profiles, tapers, and contoured transitions.
Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert
The VCGT 160404 insert (also written without spaces as vcgt160404) performs well in finish turning of components made of aluminum alloys, brass, and bronze, as well as other nonferrous metals. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 40 mm at a cutting speed Vc = 600 m/min, the result is approximately 4775 rpm. Such high speeds combined with a sharp edge prevent built-up edge formation that degrades the surface finish of soft alloys. For aluminum alloys with high silicon content, reduce the feed and check cutting edge wear more frequently, because silicon is highly abrasive. These turning tool inserts are supplied in grade K10 by the Korean brand Horn.
The small corner radius rε of 0.4 mm limits radial force and allows small radii to be reproduced on the workpiece at low feeds with stable clamping. The single-sided, positive design provides two sharp cutting edges, so when one corner is worn, simply rotate the insert in the pocket without changing the holder. With ample coolant and rigid clamping, VCGT 160404 maintains repeatable dimensions in batch production of nonferrous parts and reduces the risk of scratching thin walls. Use emulsion or oil with inserts for turning light alloys to flush chips out of the cutting zone.
Grade K10 belongs to the group ISO N — it is intended for aluminum and nonferrous metals, not structural steel or stainless steel. For turning steel and cast steel, select an insert in a grade from the groups ISO P or M; the sharp, positive VCGT edge is also unsuitable for interrupted cutting with heavy impact.

Frequently asked questions about the VCGT 160404 insert
number of cutting edges, tool selection, and workpiece materials
Two — a diamond with a 35° angle has 2 acute corners for cutting, and the positive, single-sided geometry (letter C, 7° clearance angle) allows only the top side of the insert to be used. When one corner becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in the pocket without changing the holder.
Holders with a V 16 diamond-shaped pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning SVJCR/L and SVHCR/L and neutral SVVCN with shank cross sections of 20×20–32×32 mm; for boring, boring bars S25S–S40U with the suffix SVUCR/L or SVQCR/L. The compatible turning tools section above provides a complete list of right-hand and left-hand versions.
Mainly in the nose radius: 0.4 mm in version 160404 is intended for finishing at low feeds and machining small radii, whereas 0.8 mm is a more versatile option with a stronger edge. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, side length 16 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical.
This is not recommended — grade K10 belongs to the group ISO N and is optimized for aluminum and nonferrous metals. For structural steel and stainless steel, use an insert in a grade from the groups ISO P or M; the sharp, positive VCGT edge would wear faster in harder, more abrasive material.
