How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M12 x1.75 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 9 mm, square size 7 mm.

M12 x1.75 left-hand DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1.75 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M12 x1.75 thread.

M12 left-hand machine tap for through holes – cobalt HSSE with a long shank

The M12 left-hand machine tap for through holes is a specialized tool for cutting M12 left-hand internal threads in components that rotate clockwise during normal operation. HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimum tool life when machining difficult-to-machine materials requiring high precision. A left-hand thread is essential in applications where a right-hand thread could loosen under the torque of the mechanical component. The long shank in accordance with DIN 376 provides increased clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance when tapping deep holes.

Key features of the M12 left-hand machine tap

  • Left-hand thread direction (LH) used in components that rotate clockwise, where a right-hand thread could loosen under the torque of the mechanical component
  • Long shank to DIN 376 provides greater clamping rigidity and improved tool guidance when tapping deep holes in difficult-to-machine materials
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C required when machining alloy steels and difficult-to-machine materials
  • The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 376 ensures thread accuracy and full interchangeability with left-hand fasteners used in the machinery industry
  • Compatibility with ER20 and ER25 tool holders and tapping heads with reversible rotation for cutting left-hand threads on CNC centers
  • Metric pitch of 1.75 mm in accordance with DIN 13, with a recommended tap drill diameter of 10.2 mm, identical to that for the M12 right-hand thread with the same pitch

The M12 left-hand machine tap is used for drive shafts, spindles, left bicycle pedals, and wherever a component rotates clockwise during normal machine operation. Form B with straight flutes directs chips forward when tapping through holes. Cooling with an oil emulsion at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended to maintain optimum tool life.

Frequently asked questions

The M12 left-hand thread is used for drive shafts, spindles, left bicycle pedals, locknuts, and wherever a component rotates clockwise and a right-hand thread could loosen.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M12 left-hand thread is 10.2 mm — identical to that for the right-hand thread. Thread direction does not affect the tap drill diameter.

Yes, the M12 left-hand thread requires bolts and nuts with left-hand threads. These fasteners are available from most industrial suppliers, but must be specified when ordering.
