How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M22 x2.5 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 18 mm, square size 14.5 mm.

1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 2.5 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M22 x2.5 thread.

M22 left-hand through-hole machine tap – HSSE for special applications

The M22 left-hand through-hole machine tap is a specialized tool for cutting left-hand internal threads with a diameter of 22 mm in components rotating clockwise. Made from HSSE high-speed steel with 5% cobalt, it guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and optimal tool life when machining difficult-to-machine materials. Left-hand threads are used in applications requiring protection against self-loosening in the direction of rotation of the working component or in mechanisms with special design requirements.

Key features of the M22 left-hand machine tap for through holes

  • Left-hand thread direction (LH) used in components rotating clockwise, where a right-hand thread could self-loosen under inertial forces
  • Long shank to DIN 376 provides greater clamping rigidity and better tool guidance, which is essential when tapping large diameters
  • HSSE steel with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 65-67 HRC and thermal resistance up to 650°C required when machining alloy and stainless steels
  • Tolerance 6H according to DIN 376 ensures precise left-hand threads and full interchangeability with fasteners
  • Compatibility with ER32 and ER40 tool holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation for CNC machining centers
  • Metric pitch of 2.5 mm complies with DIN 13, recommended tap drill diameter of 19.5 mm for a full left-hand thread profile

The M22 left-hand machine tap is used in the machinery industry to manufacture shafts, spindles, and rotating components requiring protection against self-loosening. Large-diameter left-hand threads are also found in turnbuckles, tensioners, and adjustment mechanisms. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

The M22 left-hand thread is used in components rotating clockwise to prevent self-loosening, in turnbuckles, tensioners, adjustment mechanisms, and wherever a left-hand thread is required.

The recommended tap drill diameter for the M22 left-hand thread is 19.5 mm — identical to that for the right-hand thread. Thread direction does not affect the tap drill diameter.

Yes, the M22 left-hand thread requires screws and nuts with left-hand threads. Standard right-hand threaded fasteners are not compatible and may damage the thread.
