Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap
The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out
The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. It has no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only with the tap as it is reversed out. The shank of the G 1/4 tap according to DIN 5156 has a diameter of 11 mm and a square size of 9 mm.
G 1/4 inch machine tap for steel and stainless steel
Machine Tap G 1/4 DIN 5156 C HSSE Narex is a professional tap designed for producing parallel pipe threads G1/4 inch in through holes. Made of high-grade HSSE high-speed steel, it provides excellent tool life, abrasion resistance and reliable performance in steel, stainless steel and cast iron.
This model features a form C chamfer (2–3 cutting threads), which facilitates a fast, precise start to tapping. The tap is manufactured in accordance with DIN 5156, ensuring full dimensional repeatability and compatibility with the BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread system.
G1/4 inch machine tap is commonly used in pneumatic and hydraulic installations and wherever leak-tight, standardized pipe connections are required.
- HSSE – cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel, resistant to abrasion and heat
- Form C chamfer – 2–3 cutting threads, ideal for through holes
- Application – for steel, stainless steel and cast iron
- Manufacturing accuracy – compliance with DIN 5156
- Ideal for G pipe connections in hydraulics, pneumatics and industry
Frequently asked questions
The question “how many mm is G 1/4 inch” or “how many cm is G 1/4 inch” often arises when selecting pipe tapping tools. Contrary to what one might expect, the value 1/4 inch (equivalent to 13.16 mm or 1.31 cm) does not indicate the thread diameter, but the nominal size of the pipe that the thread fits. In practice, the 1/4 inch G tap has an outside diameter of 13.16 mm, because G (BSP) pipe threads are designed for thick-walled pipes.
For this reason, always check the thread diameter in the technical data instead of converting inches directly to millimeters. In the BSP system, thread size is determined by the design of the entire installation, not just the nominal dimension.
No. A G (BSP) thread is a parallel pipe thread, meaning its diameter is constant along its entire length. Unlike taper threads (designated R or BSPT), G threaded connections are not self-sealing. This means that a G thread does not provide a seal on its own – it requires an additional sealing element, e.g. a flat gasket, O-ring or plastic washer. This sealing method is commonly used in hydraulic, pneumatic and industrial installations.
