Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap
The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out
The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. It has no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only with the tap as it is reversed out. The shank of the G 1 tap according to DIN 5156 has a diameter of 25 mm and a square size of 20 mm.

The question “how many mm is G 1 inch” or “how many cm is G 1 inch” often arises when selecting pipe tapping tools. Contrary to what one might expect, the value 1 inch (equivalent to 33.25 mm or 3.32 cm) does not indicate the thread diameter, but the nominal size of the pipe that the thread fits. In practice, the 1 inch G tap has an outside diameter of 33.25 mm, because G (BSP) pipe threads are designed for thick-walled pipes.
For this reason, always check the thread diameter in the technical data instead of converting inches directly to millimeters. In the BSP system, thread size is determined by the design of the entire installation, not just the nominal dimension.
