The designation 1/4 inch (6.35 mm / 0.635 cm) refers to the nominal pipe size, not the actual thread diameter. The G 1/4 die has an outside diameter of 13.16 mm because the BSP system accounts for pipe wall thickness.
The G (BSP) thread has a parallel form with a constant diameter along its entire length. Connections of this type in pneumatic systems do not seal on their own – a flat gasket, an O-ring, or PTFE tape is required.
