The rod diameter should be 4.88-4.92 mm. Material preparation requires particular precision - clamp the stainless steel rod very securely and chamfer the end at 45° over a length of 2 mm.
Stainless steel at such a small diameter requires intensive lubrication with a specialized INOX threading paste. Work very gently, reversing half a turn after each turn and avoiding excessive pressure during cutting.
