Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

double-sided 80° diamond with a hole and chip breaker

The CNMG 120404 turning insert is a double-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, intended for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape C denotes a diamond with a 80° corner angle — the substantial, rigid corner withstands varying loads during longitudinal turning, facing, and light profiling. The negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used, providing four cutting edges at two 80° corners. The nose radius rε 0.4 mm is suitable for finishing and semi-finishing at low feed rates, ensuring a smooth workpiece surface. The hole with a chip breaker on both sides, designated by the letter G according to ISO 1832, allows screw clamping and controls chip flow and breaking.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — 2 corners of 80° on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), occasionally also cast iron.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — finishing and semi-finishing at low feed rates, a smooth surface without secondary machining.
  • The 80° diamond shape combines a strong corner with the ability to perform longitudinal turning and facing with one tool.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: edge length 12.9 mm, IC 12.7 mm (1/2″), thickness 4.76 mm — fit holders with a size 12 C pocket.
  • Tolerance class M provides repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.

Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert

The CNMG 120404 insert (also written without spaces as cnmg120404) performs well when turning shafts, bushings, and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components — it is a typical insert for indexable turning tools for external and internal turning. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at a cutting speed Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1990 rpm. The smaller nose radius of 0.4 mm reduces radial forces and the tendency to vibrate, making this version well suited to slender workpieces and finishing passes.

For austenitic stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 55–320 m/min, a constant feed rate, and continuous coolant flow to limit work hardening and remove heat from the layer being cut. In structural steels, grade H6310 also performs efficiently in semi-finishing at a feed rate of 0.22–0.44 mm/rev, removing 1–4 mm of stock in a single pass. The PVD coating increases the cutting edge's resistance to abrasion and heat, extending edge life between indexing operations. Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select the version CNMG 120404 CBN with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge.

Frequently asked questions about the CNMG 120404 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Four — the 80° diamond has 2 usable corners per side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. Once an edge becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.

Holders with a size 12 diamond-shaped C pocket (IC 12.7 mm): for external turning TCLNR/L and PCLNR/L (entering angle 95°), PCBNR/L and TCKNR/L (75°) and PCMNN, TCMNN and TCZNN with cross sections of 16×16–40×40 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S20R–S50V with a TCLNR/L or PCLNR/L head.

Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm is selected for roughing at higher feed rates. The remaining dimensions (IC 12.7 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 55–320 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
