Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

double-sided 80° diamond with a hole and chip breaker

The CNMG 190612 turning insert is a double-sided, indexable diamond insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. The C shape, a diamond with a 80° corner angle, combines a strong corner that withstands loads with the ability to perform longitudinal turning and facing with one tool. The negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used — a total of four cutting edges. The large nose radius rε of 1.2 mm handles high feed rates and is well suited to roughing and semi-finishing. The hole and chip breaker on both sides (type G according to ISO 1832) control chip flow and chip breaking at large depths of cut.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — 2 corners with a 80° angle on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — general-purpose PVD-coated carbide: steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Corner radius rε 1.2 mm — handles high feed rates and heavy stock removal, allowing one insert to cover roughing and semi-finishing operations.
  • The strong 80° corner angle provides a rigid, durable cutting edge that withstands impact loads during interrupted turning.
  • Tolerance class M ensures repeatable edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 19.05 mm, thickness 6.35 mm — compatible with holders with a 19 pocket.

Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert

The CNMG 190612 insert (also written without a space as cnmg190612) is suitable for rough and semi-finish turning of shafts, bushings and forgings made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 80 mm at Vc = 180 m/min, the result is approximately 716 rpm. When machining stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 130–225 m/min and a constant feed rate to reduce work hardening of the layer being cut. The thickness of 6.35 mm and radius of 1.2 mm allow several millimeters of stock to be removed in a single pass. Grade H6310 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

In the CNMG 1906 family, the nose radius determines the application: a smaller radius favors finishing and a smooth surface, the 1.2 mm radius is a general-purpose roughing variant that handles higher feed rates, and larger radii are selected for the heaviest roughing. As an insert for turning tools, CNMG 190612 is compatible with holders with a size 19 C-shaped diamond pocket — both for external turning and with boring bars for machining holes. This cutting insert is suitable for series production, where quick cutting edge changes without resetting the tool matter.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, choose turning inserts for hardened steel with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge CBN.

Frequently asked questions about the CNMG 190612 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Four — the 80° diamond has 2 corners usable per side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. When an edge becomes dull, simply index the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.

Holders with a size 19 C-shaped diamond pocket: for external turning PCLNR/L (entering angle 95°), PCBNR/L (75°) and PCMNN (50°) with shank cross sections of 32×32 and 40×40 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S40U and S50V with a PCLNR/L head. See the compatible turning tools section for the complete list.

The radius 1.2 mm strengthens the corner and allows higher feed rates, making CNMG 190612 a variant for roughing and semi-finishing. Smaller radii (e.g. 0.8 mm) are selected for finishing when surface finish takes priority over productivity.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 130–225 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
