Where chips remain in a straight-flute tap

The flute holds the chips until the tap is reversed out

The straight flute runs parallel to the tap axis. It has no helix to carry chips upward. The chamfer cutting edges are not ground at an angle, so they do not push chips downward. Short chips break into fragments and remain in the flute, beside the cutting edges that produced them. They leave the hole only when the tap is backed out. The M7 x1 tap has a reinforced shank according to DIN 371: diameter 7 mm, square drive 5.5 mm.

M7 x1 DIN 371 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips remain in the flute, next to the cutting edges that produced them.
2
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
Individual fragments exit at the top, onto the workpiece surface.
5
A few fragments fall below the tip and exit through the bottom of the hole.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M7 x1 thread.

M7 INOX machine tap – for through and blind holes

The M7 INOX machine tap with a short shank in accordance with DIN 371, designated HSSE 800, is designed for precise tapping of holes with a diameter of 7 mm in stainless and structural steels. Its HSSE high-speed steel construction with 5% added cobalt ensures a hardness of 66 HRC and long cutting edge life even when machining materials with strengths up to 800 MPa. Form C with straight flutes provides general-purpose use in through and blind holes. The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 371 confirms high manufacturing quality.

Key features of the M7 HSSE 800 general-purpose tap

  • HSSE 800 designation confirms suitability for machining steels with strengths up to 800 MPa, including stainless and alloy steels
  • Compliance with DIN 371 confirms quality and ensures standardized short shank dimensions compatible with European tool holders
  • Durability increased by the addition of 5% cobalt allows operation at temperatures up to 650°C without loss of cutting edge performance
  • Material versatility covering 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steels, structural steels up to 800 MPa, and nonferrous metals
  • Compatibility with ER16 holders and tapping heads for CNC machining centers with synchronous tapping and automatic tool changing
  • M7 machine tap for through holes and blind holes with form C allows both hole types to be tapped with a single tool without the risk of jamming

The M7 HSSE 800 machine tap is used in series production of mechanical components and steel structures. It performs well in the production of special components. The tap drill diameter for an M7 thread is 6 mm for a coarse thread with a pitch of 1 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M7 HSSE tap is suitable for austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa, ductile cast iron, and aluminum and brass alloys. It is not recommended for hardened steels above 45 HRC.

The nominal tap drill diameter for the M7 thread is 6 mm. The hole tolerance zone should be within the range of 5.9–6.1 mm. A hole at the lower tolerance limit produces a fuller thread profile, while a hole at the upper limit reduces tapping torque.

The M7 tap works with ER16 holders and tapping chucks with axial compensation. Synchronized heads with automatic tool change capability are recommended for CNC machines.
