How the type B through-hole chamfer pushes chips down the hole

Chips exit at the bottom instead of returning through the thread

The type B through-hole chamfer has a chip breaker at the tip of the tap – an angled notch in the cutting edges. The chip breaker directs chips down the hole, ahead of the tap tip. The chips curl into a spring shape, break into short pieces and exit the hole on the other side of the workpiece. The threads already cut remain clean because the chips do not pass through them on their way up. The M8 x1.25 tap has a reduced shank to DIN 376: diameter 6 mm, square size 4.9 mm.

M8 x1.25 DIN 376 tap – diagram of chip movement and direction of rotation during tapping
1
Straight flute – chips do not enter it; the flute carries lubricant to the cutting edges.
2
The chip breaker at the tip of the tap directs chips down the hole.
3
The tap rotates clockwise to cut a right-hand thread.
4
B chamfer: 3.5–5.5 incomplete threads on the entry taper.
5
The chips break into segments: individual pieces at the top of the hole, with progressively more farther down. They fall out below the workpiece.
6
Feed 1.25 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M8 x1.25 thread.

M8 machine tap for through holes – HSSE-PM with DIN 376 long shank

The M8 machine tap for through holes, made from HSSE-PM powder metallurgy steel with a long shank according to DIN 376, is designed for the most demanding applications in high-volume production. Powder metallurgy technology provides a uniform microstructure and a hardness of 67-69 HRC, while the long shank ensures minimal tool runout. The combination of powder metallurgy steel and a long shank provides maximum productivity and repeatability in high-volume production of the most popular M8 size.

Technical specifications of the M8 HSSE-PM machine tap with long shank

  • HSSE-PM powder metallurgy steel with a uniform microstructure ensures a hardness of 67-69 HRC and 2-3 times the service life of conventional HSSE taps
  • Long shank to DIN 376 ensures greater clamping rigidity and minimal runout, which is critical in high-volume production
  • Most popular M8 size used across all industries — from electronics and automotive to machine building
  • Increased wear resistance due to the uniform carbide structure, ensuring consistent performance throughout the service life
  • Optimal geometry for difficult-to-machine materials, austenitic stainless steels, and titanium alloys
  • The 6H tolerance in accordance with DIN 376 ensures thread accuracy and full interchangeability with fasteners

The M8 HSSE-PM machine tap with long shank is used on automated tapping lines in high-volume automotive production and the aerospace and medical industries. The combination of powder metallurgy steel and a long shank ensures maximum productivity and repeatability. Cooling with an emulsion containing EP additives at a concentration of 8-10% is recommended.
