Grade H9015 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction
double-sided 55° diamond with a hole and chip breaker
The DNMG 110408 turning insert is a double-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of H9015 grade cemented carbide, intended for turning unalloyed and alloy steels. Shape D, a diamond with a 55° corner angle, facilitates longitudinal turning, copy turning, and profiling thanks to its slender corner. Negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used — a total of four cutting edges. The nose radius rε 0.8 mm combines a good surface finish with cutting edge strength at feed rates of 0.15–0.25 mm/rev. The hole and double-sided chip breaker (type G according to ISO 1832) control chip flow and breaking.
Key advantages of the H9015 cemented carbide insert
- Four cutting edges — 2 corners of 55° on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
- 55° diamond for copy turning — the slender corner facilitates contour access, profiling, and machining undercuts on shafts.
- Corner radius rε 0.8 mm — a balance between surface finish and cutting edge strength at feed rates of 0.15–0.25 mm/rev.
- The hole and double-sided chip breaker (type G according to ISO 1832) control chip flow and breaking on both sides of the insert.
- Tolerance class M provides repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 11.6 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 4.76 mm — compatible with holders with a 11 pocket.
Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert
The DNMG 110408 insert (also written without a space as dnmg110408) is suitable for turning shafts, sleeves, and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 1592 rpm. For stainless steel, maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min and a constant feed rate to limit work hardening of the layer being cut. The 55° corner angle produces less radial resistance than a 80° or 90° corner, so the insert performs better on slender workpieces and in copy turning. Indexable inserts in grade H9015 are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
In semi-finishing, the DNMG 110408 insert maintains a consistent stock allowance between the roughing and finishing passes, reducing the number of tool changes. The chip breaker on the rake face curls and breaks the chip within a feed range of 0.15–0.25 mm/rev, reducing the risk of chips wrapping around the workpiece. Nose radius selection affects surface finish and load: rε 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, a smaller radius is reserved for finishing, and a larger one for heavier turning. This makes turning inserts for D-shaped diamond pockets suitable for both one-off and series production.
Grade H9015 is a carbide for semi-finishing steel — it is not intended for turning hardened steels above 45 HRC. For such tasks, select turning inserts for hardened steel with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge (CBN) or a more rigid corner shape.

Frequently asked questions about the DNMG 110408 insert
use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters
Four — the 55° diamond has 2 corners per side, and the negative geometry (clearance angle 0°) allows both sides of the insert to be used. When a corner becomes dull, simply index the insert in the pocket without changing the holder.
Holders with a D-shaped diamond pocket for size 11 (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning TDJNR/L (entering angle 93°) and TDNNN (62.5°) with shank cross sections of 16×16–25×25 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S25S and S32T with a TD-NR/L, TDQNR/L, or TDUNR/L head.
Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm is selected for heavier turning at higher feed rates. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical.
Yes — the cutting data table includes group ISO M (stainless steel). Maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
