K10 carbide indexable insert – applications and design

single-sided, positive 55° diamond with a sharp edge for nonferrous metals

The DCGT 11T304 turning insert is a single-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert made of fine-grained K10 grade cemented carbide, designed for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape D, a diamond with a 55° corner angle, facilitates profile turning, copy turning and access to the workpiece contour thanks to its two sharp corners. The positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle and a fine, often polished cutting edge reduce cutting forces and power consumption. The nose radius rε of 0.4 mm is a finishing option that promotes a smooth surface at low feed rates. The insert is secured with a central screw in the tool holder pocket, leaving open space above the cutting edge and facilitating unobstructed chip flow.

Key features of the K10 carbide insert for aluminum

  • Two cutting edges — the 55° diamond has 2 sharp corners on a single working side of the insert; once a corner becomes dull, simply rotate the insert to the other corner.
  • Fine-grain K10 carbide — ISO N group for aluminum and nonferrous metals; maintains edge sharpness at high cutting speeds.
  • Positive 7° geometry — low cutting forces and reduced power consumption, beneficial for slender and thin-walled workpieces.
  • The sharp, polished edge reduces built-up edge formation typical of ductile aluminum and improves surface quality.
  • Countersunk hole and chip breaker — central screw clamping and controlled flow of fine, ductile chips.
  • The nose radius rε of 0.4 mm is a finishing option; a larger radius within the family increases edge strength during rough turning.

Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert

The DCGT 11T304 insert (also written without spaces as dcgt11t304) is suitable for turning aluminum alloy shafts, sleeves and housings, as well as brass, bronze and copper components. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 30 mm at Vc = 600 m/min, the result is approximately 6366 rpm. Aluminum is turned at high cutting speeds, so the machine tool should provide sufficiently high spindle speeds. K10 grade indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

When machining aluminum, limiting built-up edge formation is essential because it impairs the surface finish and dimensional accuracy of the workpiece. Sharp, positive geometry and a generous supply of emulsion or oil help by flushing fine, ductile chips out of the cutting zone. For finishing, use low feed rates and shallow depths of cut, and select the 0.4 mm nose radius to suit the required surface roughness. For larger machining allowances, choose a version within the family with a larger nose radius, which increases edge strength during rough turning. A well-prepared cutting edge also reduces machining time by allowing higher cutting speeds without compromising surface roughness.

Application limitation

Grade K10 and the sharp, positive geometry are intended for aluminum and nonferrous metals — for turning steel or cast iron, choose an insert from group ISO P or ISO K in a grade with suitable wear resistance.

Frequently asked questions about the DCGT 11T304 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Two — a diamond with a 55° angle has 2 acute corners, and the positive, single-sided geometry (7° clearance angle) uses only the top face of the insert. Once one corner becomes dull, rotate the insert in its pocket to the other without changing the tool holder.

Holders with a 11 diamond-shaped pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning, tools SDHCR/L, SDJCR/L and SDNCN with shank cross sections from 12×12 to 32×32 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S16P–S40U with the suffix SDXCR/L, SDPCR/L, SDQCR/L or SDUCR/L. See the compatible turning tools section for the full list.

Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm (code 04) is used for finishing at low feed rates and produces a smoother surface, while 0.8 mm (code 08) is a version with greater edge strength for slightly heavier cuts. The other dimensions — IC 9.525 mm and thickness 3.97 mm — are identical.

This is not recommended. Grade K10 and the sharp, positive geometry are intended for aluminum and nonferrous metals in group ISO N. For turning steel or cast iron, choose an insert from ISO group P or K with greater wear resistance and a higher cutting edge operating temperature.
