K10 carbide positive insert – applications and design
single-sided 55° rhombus with a hole and chip breaker for aluminum
The DCGT 11T308 turning insert is a positive, single-sided rhombic insert made of fine-grained cemented carbide in grade K10, intended for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape D, a rhombus with a 55° corner angle, facilitates machining contours and profiles requiring access with an acute corner. The positive 7° clearance angle (letter C) indicates positive geometry — the insert cuts on one side and provides two cutting edges. The sharp, often polished edge reduces built-up edge formation and ensures a smooth surface with low cutting forces.
Key features of the K10 carbide indexable insert
- Two cutting edges — 2 sharp 55° corners on one side of the insert; once worn, simply rotate the insert in the pocket without changing the tool holder.
- Grade K10 for ISO group N — fine-grained carbide for aluminum, aluminum alloys, and nonferrous metals such as brass and bronze.
- Positive geometry with a sharp edge — low cutting resistance and a reduced risk of built-up edge formation when machining ductile alloys.
- The rε 0.8 mm corner radius combines a good surface finish with resistance to tip chipping.
- Tolerance class G, indicating a ground profile, provides repeatable edge positioning after rotating the insert in the pocket.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: cutting edge length 11.6 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.97 mm — compatible with holders with a 11 diamond pocket.
Applications and cutting data selection for the diamond-shaped insert
The DCGT 11T308 insert (also written without spaces as dcgt11t308) is suitable for turning aluminum alloy sleeves, pistons and housings, as well as brass and bronze components. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 600 m/min, the result is approximately 4775 rpm. The high cutting speeds permitted for aluminum require checking the maximum permissible spindle speed and the balance of the clamped workpiece beforehand. K10 grade indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
The countersunk hole secures the insert with a clamping screw, while the single-sided chip breaker (type T according to ISO 1832) curls long, ductile aluminum chips and directs them away from the machining zone. Ground tolerance class G limits variation in cutting edge position after indexing, making it easier to maintain dimensions across a batch of parts. During wet turning, emulsion or cutting oil flushes away chips and prevents material from adhering to the polished rake face. The sharp, positive cutting edge geometry reduces cutting resistance, making the DCGT 11T308 insert suitable for machining thin-walled sleeves and parts prone to deformation.
Grade K10 and the sharp, positive geometry are intended for nonferrous metals in group ISO N — not for steel or cast iron. For turning steel (group ISO P) choose a coated-grade insert with geometry suited to ferrous materials.

Frequently asked questions about the DCGT 11T308 insert
number of cutting edges, tool selection, and workpiece materials
Two — the 55° diamond has 2 acute corners, and the positive geometry (7° clearance angle) makes the insert single-sided, using only its top face. Once one corner is worn, rotate the insert in its pocket to use the other without replacing the tool holder.
Holders with a 11 diamond-shaped pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning SDHCR/L, SDJCR/L and SDNCN with shank cross sections from 12×12 to 32×32 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S16P–S40U with the suffix SDXCR/L, SDPCR/L, SDQCR/L, SDUCR/L or SD-CR/L. Select right-hand R or left-hand L versions according to the feed direction.
Mainly in nose radius rε: 0.4 mm is used for finishing and light stock removal at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is a general-purpose version, while larger radii increase tip strength for deeper cuts. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 3.97 mm) remain the same within the family.
It is not intended for this purpose — grade K10 and the sharp, positive geometry are suited to group ISO N, meaning aluminum and nonferrous metals. For turning steel (group ISO P) use a coated-grade insert with geometry suited to ferrous materials.
