Milling carbide inserts

Milling inserts are otherwise known as cutting inserts designed for folding milling tools. They are made of tungsten carbide, which is characterized by very high hardness, wear resistance and high resistance to high temperatures. These features make tungsten carbide cutting inserts a very good cutting material for the cutting tips of rotary tools such as folding mills, milling heads, folding countersinks, as well as monolithic tools such as carbide milling cutters or ghost milling cutters. They are often called multi-cutting inserts because they have multiple cutting corners a minimum of 1 and most often two cutting edges.

Of course, the more cutting edges, the better for the economy of machining, so the choice of inserts with a large number of corners is advisable, but this is usually associated with an increase in the unit price of each insert.

The purpose of milling inserts

Milling inserts are designed for folding tools, which have special slots designed for the insert. The milling tools themselves, in addition to being designed for milling, are still required to meet the condition of rotating around their own axis while the workpiece material remains stationary. Such tools include:

milling heads,
folding cutters,
folding countersinks
folding disc cutters.

These inserts come in the ISO standard version, which is produced by most carbide manufacturers, or in a special design where the manufacturer has designed the insert according to its own dimensions and shape. Such inserts are unlikely to be recommended because the benefits of the special design are disproportionate to the price. Standard milling inserts are the best choice if you care about cost-effectiveness of machining, continuity of the supply of forked inserts and unification of the tool shop with interchangeable inserts.

The most popular inserts for folding cutters and milling heads

The most popular milling inserts on the market are those for planning, that is, for milling planes or aligning them. These inserts are primarily triangular-shaped inserts, such as TPKN 1603 PPR, TPKN 2204 PPR, smooth with 3 cutting edges, available in right PPR or left PPL or right and left PPN versions. This insert model is ideally suited for milling heads 220.17 according to the Dolfamex designation. Square inserts such as SPKN 1203 EDR or SPKN 1504 EDR with 4 cutting edges also belong to the milling inserts for planning. Both of these grades come in uncoated gray versions like Baildonit's SM25T and coated gold-colored N250 for machining steel and stainless steel in tough cutting conditions. Milling inserts of newer design already with chipbreaker are rectangular inserts APKT single-sided with 2 cutting edges. They come in sizes APKT 1003 and APKT 1604 and are designed for both face milling, planing, pocket milling, profiling, hole milling, side milling, etc. They can be used both in folding milling cutters with diameter 12 mm and 20 up to 40 mm.

Manufacturers of milling inserts

In Poland, the only manufacturer of cutting milling inserts is the Baildon company and the former Baidlonit company. Baildon took over the production of SPKN, TPKN and SPUN turning inserts.
