Inch pipe machine taps in practice
Machine taps are used for high-performance threading in holes previously drilled by drills. These can be through-holes - with no bottom or blind holes. Inch machine taps in the standard are mainly found in one dimensional version and, more precisely, in the DIN-5156 standard. This is an international German standard that defines the dimensions of the inch tapping, which in development is Deutsches Institut für Normung. Inch taps made in DIN 5156 specifies that they are machine taps with a through shank, i.e. it has a threading part wider than the shank part. This makes it possible to cut threads from deep holes and where access to the hole is difficult.
Types of inch machine taps
When it comes to the standard of execution we have mainly DIN 5156, there are 3 nut types available due to the purpose: C, C torsion and B. The C straight nut is designed for both holes and through-holes, and has a short nut in which a full thread starts from 2-3 coils. During machining, the threader stores the chip in the chip grooves without pushing them down or up the hole. The C torsion nut is typically designed for blind holes, their short nut allows threading of holes almost to the very bottom, while thanks to the torsion of the chip grooves to the right, the chips are led up the hole. This prevents the taps from getting clogged with chips and, consequently, from breaking or damaging the taps. Cap B is dedicated to through-holes, it has a full thread profile between 3.5-5 turns, and there is a chipbreaker at the beginning of the tapping tool. It directs the chips down the hole and breaks the chip that forms when tapping.
