Thread turning is the most efficient and productive process for obtaining external and internal threads. Thread turning knives come in two forms of design.
What is the process of turning threads?
The first step before turning threads, is to choose the turning knife we will use to turn the thread. We have a choice of turning knives with a brazed insert, HSS high speed steel and folding thread turning knives.

When turning threads in unit and small batch quantities, knives with a brazed insert or in HSS are a good choice. These are low-cost threading tools, which is a very important factor when turning small quantities of threads. In addition, knives with a brazed insert have a high tolerance for imperfections during machining, such as vibration or inaccuracy in the pairing of feed and machine speed to the thread being machined.
The best efficient choice of lathe knives for turning threads would be brazed insert lathe knives. They are built with a shank of mostly square cross-section and a socket for a thread cutting insert. The turning knives have sockets designed for a specific insert size, such as 11, 16, 22 and 27. The same as turning knives come in versions for right-hand threads, left-hand threads for internal and external threads. The tools for external right-hand threads have the designations ER (external right ) and for internal right-hand threads IR ( internal right ), left-hand threads similarly EL ( external left ) and IL ( internal left ).
Thread turning dies for threads in their nomenclature have the type of destination, the size of the shank and the size of the thread insert, e.g. PER 20x20 16. Thread turning dies for external threads have the nomenclature PER or SER, while thread turning dies for boring threads have the nomenclature PIR or SIR. The largest manufacturers of threading dies are Pafana company from Pabianice, Akko company from Turkey. The Pafana company produces both knives with a brazed insert and folded ordinary and threading knives. Akko, on the other hand, produces folding tools alone, including thread turning knives. Both manufacturers offer knives for universal inserts with standard dimensions so there is no need to buy such inserts from 1 manufacturer. The manufacturer of thread inserts is Carmex and Vardex.
