End mills - Technical articles
Finger milling cutters (otherwise known as burrs) are cutting tools, consisting of a shank (shank), a screw cutting blade. A very important feature of each cutter is the material from which it is made. It determines, for example, the hardness of the tool and, consequently, its strength. For machining harder materials, cutters with correspondingly higher strength should be used.
The most common shank cutters are made of high-speed steel (HSS), high-speed steel with cobalt (HSSE), or high-speed powder steel (HSSE-PM).
Purpose of finger milling cutters - burrs
With regard to the purpose, we can distinguish finger milling cutters for metal : finger milling cutters and overmilling cutters. Catalogically, m illing cutters have a shank are finger milling cutters and are available in various shank and blade versions. There are 3 main groups of these tools: milling cutters with cylindrical shank, which include: NFPa - four-fingered with cylindrical shank, NFPg - double-fingered for grooves, NFPc - with Morse taper shank with thread, and other shaped milling cutters like dovetail, Woodruff grooves, etc. The price of end mills depends primarily on the type of tool itself, the type of manufacture ( here it can be HSS, HSSE, HSSE-PM and VHM or monolithic carbide milling cutters ). Each of these tools is described by Polish and international DIN standards, they clearly define its dimensions such as overall length, length of the working part and the number of blades. And for individual tools, the name and the standard are as follows: NFPa DIN-844, NFPg DIN-327, NFPc DIN-845.
Polish manufacturers of HSS and HSSE cutters.
There are several really very good manufacturers of steel cutters in Poland, these include Fenes from Siedlce, Fanar from Ciechanow, Dolfamex from Jelenia Gora and Globus Wapiennica. Choosing cutters from our domestic manufacturers, we can be sure of the high quality, performance of the cutting tools we choose. The milling cutters for steel they produce are made from a group of the best HSS, which is SW7M steel and, in the case of milling cutters for stainless steel, HSSE cobalt high speed steel with 5% cobalt in its composition. Steel cutters should have a hardness of 62 HRC and be able to work in materials with a hardness of no more than 35 HRC and a tensile strength of no more than 800 MPa. HSS metal cutters allow machining materials such as steel, cast steel and non-ferrous materials, while the HSSE cutter otherwise known as Inox can machine steel, stainless steel, cast iron and non-ferrous materials. The choice of the right cutter depends not only on the type of material to be machined, the size or shape of the plane, but also on the type of machining to be done (such as roughing or finishing). Also important are the length and diameter of the cutter - so that the machining goes according to plan.
