They are usually equipped with a gear transmission, and their pointer makes several revolutions throughout the measurement range. The most popular sensors are those made to DIN or PN standards. Most often, the circumference is divided into 100 equal parts, each of which corresponds to a 0.01-mm displacement of the measuring tip. The value of the elementary division is 0.01 mm, while the measuring range is most often 0 - 10 mm. The permissible errors of dial gauges range from 0.5 divisions in the range of ±10 divisions to 2 divisions over the entire range.

Dialgauges are primarily used in lathe or milling work, for high-precision measurements, as well as for setting tools and workpieces in machine tools and checking machines.
