Shell end mills for metal

Face milling cutters are one of the most important groups of cutting tools, not only for milling machines, but also for lathes and sometimes drills. Pintle milling cutters are produced in order to reduce the cost of cutting tools, because these tools do not have a shank in their construction. To work, the push-on milling cutters require the use of milling arbors, but thanks to this, the part that wears the most can be replaced and the arbor remains the same and can be used to mount milling cutters of different diameters.

The use of push-on cutters for metal

This is a very large group of tools and can be divided according to the application they have. The basic tools can include cylindrical milling cutters and cylindrical face milling cutters, which are designed for roughing medium fine side surfaces and planes. They have NFCa DIN 1880 designations and come in sizes from 40 mm to 125 mm. Another group of tools is mounted disc milling cutters, which are divided into ball milling cutters with the designation NFTe and three-sided straight or alternately inclined disc milling cutters. These are tools for cutting narrow grooves, cutting shafts, profiles or milling channels. Ball milling cutters are also used for milling large depths with very small cutting thicknesses. Radius milling cutters are among the tools that cut semicircular shapes in solid material. They occur as radial convex milling cutters described by DIN 856 or according to PN NFRa, in the name of the milling cutter the radius is described, e.g. R6. Concave radius milling cutters are described by DIN 855 and Polish NFRb. Angle milling cutters are designed for angle machining, when we require the surface to be milled at a certain angle. Here there are two possibilities, either we have a symmetrical angle milling cutter having the same cutting angle on two sides or a single-sided angle milling cutter.

All the end mills are mainly produced from HSS and, less frequently, cobalt high speed steel. HSS high speed steel allows milling in steel, cast steel and structural steels not exceeding 35 HRC hardness. The hardness of HSS itself is about 62 HRC, and the best grade in this group is SW7M steel, and it is this grade that we should choose as the material of choice for our cutters. Due to their large diameters and dimensions, slip-on cutters are not often produced from HSSE Inox cobalt steel. This material in such large tools would raise the price out of proportion to the machining capabilities.
