Types of folding turning tools

Due to the purpose they can be divided into two main groups:

folding turning knives for external turning
folding turning tools for internal turning - turning in closed profiles

Why use folding turning knives

Folding knives are built with a fixed part, i.e. a shank together with a forked insert seat. The shank is used to fix the lathe knife in the vice of the lathe, it can be square or rectangular in shape. The rectangular shank has the advantage that the knife can be closer to the material being cut. On the other hand, the cutting edge itself in this tool is a widia (solid carbide) insert, which come in various shapes and sizes. Thanks to the fact that only the cutting insert is replaceable (possibly small replacement parts), this is a very efficient and economical tool in machining. With these tools you can reduce machining costs, increase productivity and shape repeatability, and reduce surface roughness. In some knives a support plate is used. With this solution, the seat of the folding lathe knife is protected and the vibrations are taken up by the support plate and not the lathe knife itself. This, of course, translates into the life of the knife and also into the cost-effectiveness of their use.

Principle of folding turning knife designations

Folding turningknives exist as external and internal turning knives, otherwise known as boring knives. Their nomenclature consists of 5 letters, 4 digits and the size of the side of the insert, which is specified numerically. An example is the folding turning knife PWLNR 25x25 08. The first letter indicates the type of attachment of the cutting insert, the second determines the shape of the insert, in this case WNMG insert, the third letter indicates the angle of application of the knife, 4 is the angle of application of the widia insert, the last letter is the type of knife and here it can be right - R and left L. The last 2 digits indicate the size of the side of the cutting insert used, in this case it would be WNMG 080408 insert or with any other radius. Folding boring lathe knives for holes have a slightly different nomenclature, because the construction is also different. These turning tools first specify: the type of shank (A- with internal cooling, S- without cooling) the size of the shank and then a 5 letter name ending with the size of the insert used. An example of the designation of boring tools would be the S20 SCLCR 09. The shank has no cooling - its size is 20 mm and it is suitable for CCMT 09T308 cutting inserts.
