Cylindrical countersinks with pilot are used to deepen a hole previously made by a drill or other drilling tool. They make a 90-degree countersink for the screw that will be screwed into the countersunk hole. This is to hide the head of the screw so that it does not protrude above the surface of the workpiece. Such a modification comes in handy especially when joining multiple parts such as stamping plates, etc.

Counterbores with fixed pilot

Cylindrical countersinks in pilot are also designed for threads. After making a hole for a specific thread (for example, by a metal drill), the countersink is made with a cylindrical countersink and then we proceed to the threading operation.

Cylindrical countersinks with pilot themselves are made from HSS and HSSE Inox cobalt high speed steel. HSS countersinks are designed for machining steels, cast steels and also non-ferrous materials such as aluminum up to a hardness of 35 HRC or less. HSS countersinks themselves, however, have a hardness of about 62 HRC. HSSE Inox cobalt steel countersinks can also be used in stainless steel and ductile iron in addition to steel, provided they do not exceed a hardness of 37 HRC.

Construction of the cylindrical countersink with pilot

Countersinks are built from three main parts: the shank, the working part and the pilot. The shank has the task of holding the tool in the sleeve or holder, while the working part is the actual part that performs the machining of the countersink hole. The pilot of a cylindrical countersink is designed to stabilize the machining process while the countersink is in operation. This translates into better quality of the machined surface, less roughness.

The size and dimensions of countersinks are described in the German DIN standard and the Polish PN standard. Cylindrical countersinks with pilot with smooth cylindrical shank are described by DIN 373 and NWSa. Countersinks with pilot on Morse taper are described by DIN 375 and Polish NWSb. Morse taper shank comes in fin version in sizes according to Morse numbers from MK1 to MK5. The purpose of the Morse fin is to hold the countersink stationary in the sleeve or spindle of the machine tool so as to prevent the countersink from rotating at higher cutting forces.
