How a spiral flute tap evacuates chips from a blind hole

The 40° flute works like a screw conveyor

The flutes of this tap follow a left-hand helix at an angle of 40° to the axis. The tap rotates counterclockwise and advances into the hole. The chip cut by the chamfer enters the flute, and the helix feeds it upward like the auger in a meat grinder. The bottom of the hole stays clean, and the cutting edges do not encounter packed chips. The M6 x1 tap has a reinforced shank according to DIN 371: diameter 6 mm, square size 4.9 mm.

M6 x1 left-hand DIN 371 tap – diagram of chip movement and rotation direction during tapping
1
The 40° spiral flute carries chips upward from the chamfer.
2
The stepped chip exits the hole and breaks into short pieces.
3
The tap rotates counterclockwise – this is how it cuts a left-hand thread.
4
Chamfer C: 2–3 incomplete threads on the tapered lead.
5
Clearance below the tap tip – min. 2 thread pitches above the bottom.
6
Feed 1 mm/rev, equal to the pitch of the M6 x1 thread.

M6 INOX left-hand machine tap – HSSE with a 40° helical cutting edge

In this line, the manufacturer offers an M6 INOX left-hand R40 machine tap with a special 40° helical cutting edge geometry and a left-hand cutting direction. The tool meets the requirements of DIN 371 and provides thread tolerance class 6H required in series production of special components. Its HSSE steel construction with 5% cobalt guarantees a hardness of 66 HRC and resistance to temperatures up to 650°C in the cutting zone. The 40° flute helix angle directs chips forward when tapping through holes. The left-hand cutting direction produces a left-hand thread.

Advantages of the universal M6 left-hand R40 tap

  • Left-hand thread used in components protected against self-loosening, drive shafts and screws securing grinding wheels that rotate clockwise
  • 40° helical cutting edge directs chips forward and out of the hole, making it ideal for tapping through holes and ensuring a clean thread
  • Material versatility covering austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa and nonferrous metals such as aluminum and brass
  • Precision to tolerance class 6H meeting the requirements for series production of special components with demanding fit tolerances
  • Conforms to DIN 371 ensures standardized short shank dimensions and interchangeability with tools from European cutting tool manufacturers
  • M6 left-hand HSSE machine tap with R40 geometry ensures efficient chip evacuation at high cutting speeds on CNC machining centers

The universal M6 left-hand R40 machine tap is used to manufacture special components requiring left-hand threads. The M6 left-hand machine tap for through holes and blind holes is compatible with ER16 holders with reversing capability. The tap drill diameter for the M6 left-hand thread is 5 mm.

Frequently asked questions

The M6 left-hand R40 HSSE tap with a 40° helical cutting edge is suitable for austenitic stainless steels 304 and 316, structural steels up to 800 MPa and ductile cast iron. The R40 geometry ensures efficient forward chip evacuation.

The M6 left-hand R40 tap has a right-hand helical cutting edge at an angle of 40°, which directs chips forward – toward the through hole. This design is optimal for blind holes, preventing chip accumulation.

M6 left-hand threads are used in components protected against self-loosening, clockwise-rotating drive shafts and screws securing grinding wheels. They prevent the joint from loosening under vibration.
