Illustrative drawing (beam cropped in the image) — the 600 mm version has 100 mm long jaws.
Electronic caliper 600 mm brings digital readout beyond the usual reach of handheld instruments: to large shafts, pipes, welded housings, and structural components. The LCD immediately shows the result in 0.01 mm increments — without counting vernier marks, which can be particularly awkward with a long beam.
This caliper with long jaws: a jaw reach of 100 mm allows measurement farther from the workpiece edge. One pair of jaws with knife-edge tips handles external and internal measurements, while the clamping screw locks the slider once the dimension is set — also useful when using the instrument as a spacing gauge.

The operating principle is common to the entire family: an encoder in the slider reads its position relative to the beam and shows the result on the LCD. The differences are limited to beam and jaw length and the absence of a depth rod in long versions.
Measuring large diameters step by step
Technique matters more than with small workpieces
Measurement of a large diameter step by step
Jaws closed: 0.00 mm
Jaws perpendicular to the axis
Rock gently — the diameter is the largest reading
The clamping screw holds the measurement
When measuring a bore internally, use the largest reading along the axis and the smallest reading across it
A long beam requires two hands: one guides the slider, the other stabilizes the beam against the workpiece. Measure heavy components on a table or support, rather than holding them in the air — hand tremor directly increases reading variation.
Accuracy of ±0.04 mm according to DIN 862 – what it means at 600 mm
Maximum permissible error, temperature, and deflection
DIN 862 permits a maximum error of ±0.04 mm for external measurements in the 401–600 mm interval. The 0.01 mm resolution remains unchanged — it is the display increment, not a guarantee of agreement with the true value. The same instrument measures shorter dimensions within lower limits: up to 100 mm, the limit is ±0.02 mm.
Steel expands by approximately 11.5 µm per meter per degree Celsius. For a 600 mm workpiece, a temperature difference of just 5°C between the workpiece and the instrument produces 11.5 × 0.6 × 5 ≈ 35 µm — almost the entire permissible error. Measure large components after temperatures have equalized.
Excessive pressure bends the long jaws and beam, producing a reading that may be several hundredths of a millimeter too low. Apply light, even pressure; for tolerances below 0.05 mm, measure large dimensions with an outside micrometer or a bore gauge.
Digital caliper with a range of 600 mm replaces a rule and counting scale marks with one clear readout. The ZERO function at any position turns it into a comparator: measure a reference, zero the instrument, and read the deviations of subsequent workpieces directly on the screen.
Caliper 600 mm – frequently asked questions
They allow measurement farther into a workpiece — for example, a shaft diameter behind a shoulder or wall thickness at a distance from the edge. The short jaws of a handheld caliper cannot reach these locations at all.
The jaw tips have a knife-edge profile that allows them to spread inside a hole or bore. Move the contact points across the bore axis and use the largest reading — this is the diameter.
DIN 862 permits ±0.04 mm in the 401–600 mm interval. In practice, temperature and measuring pressure affect the result sooner than the instrument itself — a 5°C difference over 600 mm already amounts to approximately 35 µm.
Flat in its case, with the jaws open by 1–2 mm and the clamping screw loosened. A beam supported at isolated points or placed under load can bend permanently, and no calibration can reverse this.
