DCMT 11T304 turning insert with a CBN edge – applications and design
single-sided 55° diamond for turning hardened steel
The DCMT 11T304 turning insert is a single-sided, diamond-shaped indexable insert with a cubic boron nitride (CBN, Borazon) cutting edge, designed for turning hardened steels above 45 HRC. Shape D, a diamond with a 55° corner angle, facilitates profile and contour machining with good access to the workpiece. The positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle (letter C) reduces cutting forces and is suitable for slender, rigidly clamped shafts. The single-sided design with a mounting hole provides 2 corners, meaning two cutting edges. The nose radius rε of 0.4 mm makes this insert suitable for finishing at low feed rates.
Key benefits of the DCMT 11T304 insert with a CBN edge
- Two cutting edges — 2 corners with a 55° angle on the positive side of the insert reduce cutting forces on slender workpieces with low rigidity.
- CBN (boron nitride) edge — hardness second only to diamond allows turning hardened steels and surface-hardened layers, including interrupted cuts.
- Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — finishing at low feed rates with a good turned surface finish.
- The positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle reduces friction and built-up edge formation.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 11.6 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.97 mm — compatible with tool holders with a 11 diamond-shaped pocket.
- Hard turning with a CBN insert often replaces grinding, consolidating the machining process on a single machine tool.
Applications and cutting parameter selection for the DCMT diamond insert
The DCMT 11T304 insert (also written without spaces as dcmt11t304) is suitable for finish turning hardened and carburized steels, heat-treated shafts, bearing sleeves and surface-hardened components. Calculate spindle speed using the formula n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft with a diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 150 m/min, the result is approximately 1194 rpm. As turning inserts for hardened steel, CBN edges perform best with a shallow depth of cut and constant feed rate, protecting the brittle edge and maintaining a stable temperature in the cutting zone. High hot hardness allows CBN to retain its cutting edge where conventional carbide quickly loses its sharpness.
During hard turning, keep the workpiece and tool holder rigidly clamped to limit vibration that damages the cutting edge. Generally machine dry or with a light, continuous coolant supply — frequent interruptions in coolant flow expose CBN to thermal shock. These turning tool inserts are mounted in holders with a D 11 diamond-shaped pocket, selected to suit the machining diameter and reach. Short tool holder and boring bar overhang further increases system rigidity and improves surface finish. Inserts with a CBN edge are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
The CBN grade is not economical for soft steels below 45 HRC or ductile materials — choose a cemented carbide insert for these. CBN also requires a rigid setup and small uncut chip cross sections.

Frequently asked questions about the DCMT 11T304 insert
number of cutting edges, tool selection and hard turning
Two — the diamond has 2 corners with a 55° angle, while the positive, single-sided geometry (letter C, 7° clearance angle) provides access only to the top side of the insert. Once one corner becomes dull, rotate the insert in its pocket to the second cutting edge without changing the tool holder.
Holders with a 11 diamond-shaped pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning SDHCR/L, SDJCR/L and SDNCN with shank cross sections from 12×12 to 32×32 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S16P–S40U with the suffix SDXCR/L, SDPCR/L, SDQCR/L, SDUCR/L or SD-CR/L. The letters R and L indicate right-hand and left-hand versions.
Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm (code 04) is used for finishing at low feed rates and produces lower radial forces, while 0.8 mm (code 08) is a more versatile version with a stronger corner. The other dimensions — IC 9.525 mm and thickness 3.97 mm — are identical.
The cubic boron nitride (CBN) edge is designed for hardened steels above 45 HRC and covers the typical hard turning range. Perform finishing with a shallow depth of cut and rigid clamping; for soft steels below 45 HRC and ductile materials, choose a cemented carbide insert.
