Positive H6310 cemented carbide insert – applications and design

single-sided 60° triangle with a hole and chip breaker

The TCMT 110204 turning insert is a single-sided, triangular indexable insert made of grade H6310 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. The T shape, an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, facilitates access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning, facing, and internal machining. Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle reduces cutting forces, making the insert suitable for slender workpieces and small-section boring bars. The corner radius rε 0.4 mm promotes a smooth surface finish at finishing feeds of 0.05–0.1 mm/rev. The countersunk hole and single-sided chip breaker (type T according to ISO 1832) guide chips when cutting with one side of the insert.

Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert

  • Three cutting edges — the single-sided triangle provides 3 usable corners; when an edge becomes dull, simply index the insert in the pocket without replacing the holder.
  • Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide for steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
  • Positive 7° geometry — lower cutting forces and power consumption, with less vibration on thin shafts and when boring small holes.
  • The corner radius rε 0.4 mm provides a sharp corner for finishing and accurate reproduction of the workpiece contour.
  • Tolerance class M ensures repeatable edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.
  • Dimensions according to ISO 1832: edge length 11 mm, IC 6.35 mm (1/4″), thickness 2.38 mm — compatible with holders with a 11 triangular pocket.

Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert

The TCMT 110204 insert (also written without a space as tcmt110204) is suitable for finish turning structural steel shafts, bushings, and flanges, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 30 mm at Vc = 250 m/min, the result is approximately 2653 rpm. For stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min and a constant feed to limit work hardening of the layer being cut. Grade H6310 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

The small corner radius of 0.4 mm makes this insert primarily suitable for finishing: it provides low surface roughness at a shallow depth of cut, but at higher feeds the corner becomes more heavily loaded sooner than the 0.8 or 1.2 mm variants. The single-sided, positive design limits the number of edges to three but reduces cutting resistance, which matters on lower-power machine tools and with delicate, thin-walled workpieces. Select a depth of cut that does not exceed the active edge length and supply a continuous stream of emulsion for stable chip breaking.

Application limitation

Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select an insert TCMT 110204 with a cubic boron nitride (CBN) cutting edge.

Frequently asked questions about the TCMT 110204 insert

use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters

Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle makes the insert single-sided, cutting only with its top face. When a corner becomes dull, index the insert in the pocket to the next edge without changing the holder.

Holders with a 11 triangular pocket (IC 6.35 mm): for external turning STJCR/L, STGCR/L and STFCR/L with cross sections of 12×12 and 16×16 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S10K–S20R with an STUCR/L, STFCR/L, or ST-CR/L head. The letter R indicates the right-hand version, L the left-hand version.

Only in corner radius: 0.2 mm is used for precision finishing at minimal feed rates, 0.4 mm is a general-purpose finishing variant, while 0.8 mm withstands higher feeds during lighter roughing. The remaining dimensions (IC 6.35 mm, thickness 2.38 mm) are identical.

Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
