Grade H6310 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction
double-sided 60° triangle, 0.4 mm nose radius for finishing
The TNMG 160404 turning insert is a double-sided, triangular indexable insert made of H6310 grade cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. The T shape, an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, facilitates access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. Negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used — a total of six cutting edges. The small nose radius rε 0.4 mm makes this insert suitable for finishing and semi-finishing, where a smooth surface and an accurate contour are essential.
Key advantages of the H6310 cemented carbide insert
- Six cutting edges — 3 corners on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
- Grade H6310 for ISO groups P and M — PVD-coated carbide for steel (P20-P40) and stainless steel (M20-M40), and occasionally cast iron.
- Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — low surface roughness and an accurate contour in finishing and semi-finishing.
- The 60° corner angle facilitates copy turning and access to more complex workpiece profiles.
- Tolerance class M provides repeatable cutting edge positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket.
- The hole with a chip breaker on both sides (type G per ISO 1832) controls chip flow and breaking on both sides.
Applications and cutting parameter selection for the finishing insert
The PVD-coated H6310 grade combines resistance to abrasive wear with resistance to high temperatures in the cutting zone, allowing one insert to machine both non-alloy and alloy steels (ISO P20-P40 group) and austenitic stainless steels (ISO M20-M40 group). Tolerance class M ensures repeatable corner positioning after indexing the insert in the holder pocket, reducing setup time when changing cutting edges. Dimensions conforming to ISO 1832 — edge length 16.5 mm, IC 9.525 mm and thickness 4.76 mm — fit standard holders with a size 16 triangular pocket.
The TNMG 160404 insert (also written without a space as tnmg160404) is suitable for finishing shafts, sleeves and flanges made of structural steels, as well as stainless steel components. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 300 m/min, the result is approximately 2387 rpm. The small nose radius of 0.4 mm reduces radial forces and promotes low surface roughness, providing the best results at feed rates of 0.05–0.15 mm/rev and a shallow depth of cut. When machining stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min and a constant feed to avoid work hardening of the layer being cut. For rough turning with a larger machining allowance, select a variant in this family with a radius of 0.8 or 1.2 mm. H6310 grade indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.
Grade H6310 is not intended for steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, select the version TNMG 160404 CBN with a cubic boron nitride cutting edge.

Frequently asked questions about the TNMG 160404 insert
use, turning tool selection, and turning parameters
Six — the triangle has 3 corners per side, and the negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. Once an edge becomes dull, simply rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.
Holders with a 16 triangular pocket (IC 9.525 mm): for external turning TTJNR/L and MTJNR/L (entering angle 93°), TTFNR/L and TTGNR/L (90°) and TTENN and MTENN (60°) with shank cross sections of 20×20–32×32 mm; for internal turning, boring bars S20R–S40U with the suffix TTUNR/L, MTUNR/L, MTQNR/L or TT-NR/L.
Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is a variant for finishing at low feed rates and achieving low surface roughness, 0.8 mm is a general-purpose version, while 1.2 mm is selected for roughing at feed rates up to 0.4–0.5 mm/rev. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 4.76 mm) are identical.
Yes — grade H6310 covers group ISO M20-M40. Maintain a cutting speed of 80–260 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous emulsion cooling: austenitic steel conducts heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
