Grade H6018 cemented carbide indexable insert – applications and construction

single-sided 90° square with positive geometry

The SPUN 120308 turning insert is a single-sided, square indexable insert made of grade H6018 cemented carbide, designed for turning steel and stainless steel. Shape S, a square with a 90° corner angle, gives the cutting edges high strength and good heat dissipation during roughing. Positive geometry with a 11° clearance angle reduces cutting forces, allowing this cutting insert to perform well on less rigid machine tools and slender workpieces. Four corners on one side provide four cutting edges, and top clamping follows from the type N design — the insert has no hole or chip breaker.

The square profile is suitable for longitudinal turning, facing and chamfering, and the four symmetrical corners allow operations from different directions without changing the cutting edge. The nose radius rε of 0.8 mm is a general-purpose value — it combines a satisfactory surface finish with tip strength at feed rates of 0.25–0.4 mm/rev. The wide tolerance class U suits production applications where tool life and cost per cutting edge matter more than micron-level repeatability of edge positioning.

Key advantages of the H6018 cemented carbide insert

  • Four cutting edges — 4 corners at 90° on one side; when a corner becomes dull, index the insert in the pocket without changing the holder.
  • Grade H6018 for ISO groups P and M — carbide for steel and stainless steel, selected for semi-finishing and roughing.
  • Positive 11° geometry — lower cutting forces and reduced power consumption, beneficial on less rigid machine tools and thin shafts.
  • The 90° square provides a strong, load-resistant corner for rough turning of steel and cast steel under difficult conditions.
  • The nose radius rε of 0.8 mm combines surface finish with tip strength at medium and higher feed rates.
  • Type N without a hole or chip breaker, secured by a top clamp — simple mounting in holders for single-sided inserts.

Square insert applications and cutting data selection

The SPUN 120308 insert (also written without a space as spun120308) is suitable for turning shafts, discs and flanges made of structural steels and cast steel, as well as stainless steel components, especially in semi-finishing and roughing with large uncut chip cross sections. Grade H6018 is designed for low and medium speeds under difficult cutting conditions, when the chip cross section is large and the edge load varies. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 50 mm at Vc = 200 m/min, the result is approximately 1273 rpm. When machining stainless steels, maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min and a constant feed rate to reduce work hardening of the layer being cut and remove heat from the edge. Grade H6018 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn and are available in the range as inserts for turning tools and inserts for turning steel.

Application limitation

The SPUN 120308 insert has a wide tolerance class U and type N without a chip breaker — it is not intended for precision finishing to tight tolerances. Grade H6018 does not machine steels hardened above 45 HRC — for hard turning, choose an insert with a CBN cutting edge.

Frequently asked questions about the SPUN 120308 insert

handling, clamping, and turning parameters

Four — a square has 4 corners, and the positive, single-sided geometry (type N) allows cutting with only the top side of the insert. When a corner becomes dull, index the insert in the holder pocket without replacing it.

The insert is type N — it has no mounting hole or chip breaker. It is secured in the holder with a top clamp (with a clamping arm), which is typical of single-sided positive inserts with a pocket for size 12 (IC 12.7 mm).

Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm is selected for roughing at higher feed rates. The remaining dimensions (IC 12.7 mm, thickness 3.18 mm) are identical.

Yes — grade H6018 covers group ISO M. Maintain a cutting speed of 50–230 m/min, a constant feed, and continuous cooling: austenitic steel dissipates heat poorly and work-hardens when cutting is too slow.
