K10 carbide indexable insert – applications and design

positive, single-sided 60° triangle with a hole and chip breaker

The TCGT 16T308 turning insert is a positive, triangular indexable insert made of fine-grained K10 grade carbide, designed for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape T, an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, facilitates access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. The positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle makes the insert single-sided and provides three cutting edges on its working side. The sharp, often polished edge, together with the countersunk hole and single-sided chip breaker, limits material buildup on the cutting edge and controls the flow of fine, ductile aluminum alloy chips. The letter G in the designation indicates a ground tolerance class, so each corner returns to the same position after indexing. This is important in finishing, where repeatable dimensions and a smooth workpiece surface are essential.

Key features of the K10 carbide insert

  • Three cutting edges — the single-sided, positive geometry provides 3 corners of 60° each on the working side of the insert.
  • Grade K10 for ISO group N — fine-grained, uncoated carbide for aluminum, brass and other nonferrous metals.
  • Sharp, polished edge — the positive rake face reduces built-up edge formation and produces a smooth machined surface.
  • The nose radius rε of 0.8 mm combines surface finish with corner strength at feed rates up to 0.25 mm/rev.
  • Tolerance class G, with the inscribed circle IC ground to ±0.025 mm, ensures repeatable corner positioning after indexing.
  • Dimensions comply with ISO 1832: edge length 16 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.97 mm — compatible with tool holders with a size 16 triangular pocket.

Applications and cutting data selection for a positive triangular insert

The TCGT 16T308 insert (also written without spaces as TCGT16T308) performs well when turning bushings, housings, and shafts made of aluminum alloys, as well as brass and bronze components. This cemented carbide insert performs well at the high cutting speeds typical of light metal machining. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a shaft diameter of 40 mm at Vc = 600 m/min, the result is approximately 4775 rpm. Positive geometry reduces cutting forces and power requirements, which matters when machining thin-walled workpieces prone to deformation. When machining aluminum alloys, use ample coolant and flush away chips to prevent them from clogging the chip breaker groove. For finishing, select a smaller corner radius and a feed of approximately 0.1–0.15 mm/rev; for roughing, use a higher feed. As an insert for turning tools, it is secured by a screw through the center hole for quick indexing. Grade K10 turning inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade K10 is a fine-grained carbide for nonferrous metals — is not suitable for turning steel or stainless steel. For these materials, select an insert in a grade from the group ISO P or ISO M; the sharp, polished edge is also sensitive to interrupted cutting and impact.

Frequently asked questions about the TCGT 16T308 insert

number of edges, materials, and turning parameter selection

Three — the triangle has 3 corners, and the positive geometry (7° clearance angle) makes the insert single-sided, so only one side is used. When a corner becomes dull, rotate the insert in its pocket to the next edge without changing the holder.

Grade K10 is a fine-grained carbide from the group ISO N — for aluminum, aluminum alloys, brass, and other nonferrous metals. The sharp, polished edge reduces built-up edge formation. For turning steel and stainless steel, select an insert in a grade from the group ISO P or M.

Only in corner radius: 0.4 mm is used for finishing at low feed rates, 0.8 mm is the general-purpose version, and 1.2 mm is selected for roughing at higher feeds. The other dimensions (IC 9.525 mm, thickness 3.97 mm) are identical throughout the TCGT 16T3 family.

In holders with a triangular pocket for size 16 (IC 9.525 mm), designed for positive inserts secured by a screw through the center hole. Turning tool selection depends on the entering angle and cutting direction (right-hand or left-hand); verify the exact pocket type in the holder catalog data sheet.
