K10 carbide indexable insert – applications and design

single-sided 60° triangle with positive geometry for aluminum

The TCGT 16T304 turning insert is a triangular indexable insert made of fine-grained cemented carbide in grade K10, designed for turning aluminum and nonferrous metals. Shape T denotes an equilateral triangle with a 60° corner angle, providing easier access to the workpiece contour during longitudinal turning and facing. The letter C in the designation indicates positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle, making the insert single-sided with three cutting edges. The sharp, often polished edge of the GT geometry reduces cutting forces and built-up edge formation when machining soft alloys.

Positive rake geometry provides smooth chip flow and lower spindle power consumption than negative inserts. The countersunk hole allows screw fastening, simplifying replacement and ensuring repeatable edge positioning in the pocket. With a corner radius rε of 0.4 mm, the insert is primarily suited to finishing and semi-finishing, where dimensional accuracy and low surface roughness are essential. Thin cuts and low thrust force also favor use on machines with limited rigidity, where a negative insert would cause vibration.

Key benefits of the K10 carbide insert

  • Three cutting edges — the triangle provides 3 corners on one side of the insert, reducing the cost per cutting edge in precision aluminum machining.
  • Grade K10 for ISO group N — fine-grained carbide with a sharp, polished edge for aluminum, brass, bronze, and copper alloys.
  • Corner radius rε 0.4 mm — small radius for finishing at low feeds and achieving a fine surface finish.
  • Positive geometry with a 7° clearance angle reduces cutting forces and power requirements and limits deformation of thin-walled workpieces.
  • Dimensions comply with ISO 1832: edge length 16 mm, IC 9.525 mm (3/8″), thickness 3.97 mm — compatible with tool holders with a size 16 triangular pocket.
  • The 60° corner angle produces lower radial forces than a 80° corner, reducing vibration on slender shafts.

Applications and parameter selection for the triangular insert

The TCGT 16T304 insert (also written without spaces as tcgt16t304) performs well when turning shafts, bushings, and housings made of aluminum alloys, as well as brass and bronze components. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): for a workpiece diameter of 50 mm at a cutting speed Vc = 800 m/min, the result is approximately 5093 rpm. High cutting speeds in the ISO N group provide a smooth surface without built-up edge, while positive geometry limits deformation of thin-walled workpieces. When machining aluminum, use ample emulsion or oil coolant to flush away chips and reduce chip welding to the cutting edge. Grade K10 indexable inserts are supplied by the Korean brand Horn.

Application limitation

Grade K10 from the group ISO N is intended for aluminum and nonferrous metals — do not use it for steel or hardened materials. The sharp, polished edge may chip when machining hard materials; for steel, select an insert from the group ISO P.

Frequently asked questions about the TCGT 16T304 insert

materials, geometry, and turning parameters

Three — the triangle has 3 corners, but the positive, single-sided geometry (letter C, 7° clearance angle) allows only the top side of the insert to be used. The insert is secured by a screw through the countersunk hole, and when a corner becomes dull, simply rotate it in the pocket.

For aluminum and nonferrous metals from the group ISO N — aluminum alloys, brass, bronze, and copper alloys. Fine-grained carbide K10 with a sharp, polished edge reduces built-up edge formation. The insert is not intended for steel or hardened materials.

Primarily in the nose radius rε: 0.4 mm (code 04) is the option for finishing at low feeds, while a larger radius is better suited to general-purpose turning. The other dimensions — IC 9.525 mm and thickness 3.97 mm — are identical within this family.

The letter C in the designation indicates a clearance angle of 7°. Positive geometry reduces cutting forces and power requirements, promotes smooth chip evacuation, and limits deformation of thin-walled aluminum workpieces — making it well suited to less powerful and less rigid machines.
